Hi Chaps,

Just taken trev out for a blast and I seem to have no temp, oil sensors and rev counter. The speedo just about gets to 20mph although driving faster. Fans work fine. Pulled over to make sure no loose fuses -all seem ok.

Any ideas?

I did over heat last week which vented from expansion tank if that could be linked?

Other than the car drives lovely.

I’d welcome any pointers!

I would check fuse 16 but this does feed other stuff too which seems to be working such as Speedo fuel gauge and warning lamps.
Possibly a ground issue in the engine bay?

Thanks for that. I will check that fuse in morning.

I’m regards to earthing, is the one on lower near side chassis?

Check ALL the fuses. They love a bit of extreme heat and a bit of TVR damp in the passenger footwell, NOT.

They might look fine, but they may be corroded. Same for the relays. Take it all out (one by one, obviously!) and give it all a spray with electrical contact cleaner.

It's a TVR. I've had all sorts of weird electrical gremlins. ABC - Assume nothing, Believe nothing, Check everything.

😃 good advice Tyre Smoke! Thanks. I will have a good look with fuses. And checks earthing. Do you know what earth is responsible for the Dash?

No, but any black wire is generally an earth wire. I'd say it's unlikely to be an earth (yes, yes I know they're fibreglass and renowned for bad earth points) because all if it has gone at once.

Of course, you could eliminate the bad earth possibility by rigging up a good earth and introducing it to a black wire. You can bet they're all daisy chained together.

Much more likely to be a fuse/supply issue.

I think the gauges use the chassis ground in the cabin up on the transmission tunnel.
Seems odd some are working though.

The gauges use fuse 16 and are earthed at the chassis fixing bolt on the offside tunnel top.

It is not easy to get at this bolt unless someone has been in there before. The tunnel top just at the bottom of the dash has a ridge along the top of the footwell side wall. this ridge is fibreglass and covered in carpet but there is a gap in the GF ridge just where the bolt head is so to get at the bolt you will have to make a cut in the carpet (which someone before you may have done). If you cannot find an existing slit in the carpet then you will need start at a point just below the bottom of the dash face an start pressing against the carpet towards the top of the ridge. Work you way forward until you can feel the gap in the GF (about 2" wide) behind the carpet. Next find how low that gap extends and slit the carpet. You can then poke your finger in and find the bolt head. Use a 17mm spanner to tighten the bolt. You do not want to think about cleaning the earth terminals as just getting at the bolt head is bad enough.

Below is a picture of the tunnel top with the gap circled in red. You can gauge from the front face of the radio housing how far forwards the gap is.

Jesus wept Steve! laugh I think I might consider earthing somewhere more accessible.

There will be 3 or 4 ring terminals on that bolt and the same on the bolt at the other side of the tunnel.

When we take a body off we never remove the bolt just unscrew it and leave it in the body with the ring terminals on it. if you take it out you risk one or more rings going walkies which will be the start of a bad day/week trying to find it and get it back into place.

Thanks steve! I built the car so I know it well, I did recarpet over it so I will have a good look tomorrow and try and clean these up. I’m confident I did clean and fully secure all earthing points, but will certainly look at it.

I also noticed the radio panel lights just about the “three buttons” flickering too if that adds to your theory?

Probably quicker to remove dash top and confirm what your missing from the gauges not working.
Green is gauge power via fuse 16 and black is ground.
You can add a temp good ground to battery to test if you suspect it’s this.

Yes, it's called James. silly

What do you mean, identify it? It's an earth cable, just repair and refit surely?

James is most definitely an earth. biggrin

Reattach and see if it all works before putting everything away neatly.

Happy to say I was wrong about the supply side. To belt and braces it, you can run a second earth from the instrument panel to a different point, perhaps battery negative?

Nice find, I wonder how much of a ball ache it is to relocate those to somewhere more accessible or even the battery.
