Can anyone tell me who makes the steering rack for a non PAS 1995 Chimaera? Is it TVR's own.
Are there any adjusments that can be made to remove any play or is it new rack time??

TVR. Should be able to get it reconditioned. If not around £700 to 1000 for a new one. Check it is not something simple like a track rod end or loose mounts.

I'd want one hand crafted from kevlar, carbonfibre and gold for that money !

Steve,

Play is definately internal to the rack. Mounts tight and TR ends seem fine. I replaced the top and bottom UJs over the weekend which improved the situation but still some play.

That seems steep for a new rack. What's it made from?

This might be useful if any of you can remember who it is I'm talking about, he will be worth a ring...
A TVR indie specialist in Boroughbridge N.Yorks. Might be called SpecialistCars or something..?
Anyway I spoke to this guy a couple of months ago (Yes I have the memory of a goldfish) and the subject of steering racks came up. He was rather derogatory about original parts to the extent that he had redesigned and had a batch manufactured. Alledgedly better and certainly cheaper than TVR's effort...!

Try Adrian Venn (advert now on PH or failing that in Sprint) as I believe he knows the chaps that recon the racks for TVR (Coventry based) the price he told me for sorting my '92 Griff's out was very resonable.

Wedge manual racks are from a mk IV Cortina and as cheap as fried spuds. even seen racks as low as £15. The TVR ones are not but as I orginally said, can usually be reconditioned.

Having mine reconditioned at the moment due to a PAS fluid leak. Estimate was about £300-400.

That'll be Sports and Specialist Cars run by John Waggitt. I bought a 93 non PAS Chimera from him earlier this year and he replaced the rack under warranty due to play around straight ahead position. Told me that he had to get one made by TVR and cost was about £550. Didn't say anything about having had a batch made, wonder what happened to my old rack.
