Apparently I need the two rear engine mounts changing, is this a simple job, or will it involve lots of labour?

I have had the mounts on previous cars changed easily, just wondering about trev.

Secondly, recently the tappets have been V.V.Noisey,

they sort themselves after 3 mins and quiten right down, assumed initially it was down to a new oil change with thinner oil, but usually it sorts itself sooner than this.

I know cerbs need their tappets doing at intervals, does the chim too?

Mounts are an easy job would have thought an hours work.. the tappets are hydraulic no adjustment possible.

Lo again Tim

If the tappets are being noisey then, how would one go about ssshing them?

Short of going back to 15/40 again over this 0/30 (figured it would be nice for winter)

Thnx

interesting ...a tvr garage told me last month that engine mount bolts were an arse to get at the moment (ie 6 months +)...let me know.

If the thicker oil works i would use it, these engines were originally designed to run on 20/50.

Yes, use the thicker oil this is a very old engine design and TVR have done nothing to improve the valve-gear. If it's still noisey you may have a problem and you should get it checked out. Rover V8s go through cams and lifters fairly easily so this could be the problem.

Engine mounts are pretty easy. They are about $60.00 for the set and take a maximum of an hours labour each side, an hour for both if the mechanic knows what he's doing and has an easy way of supporting the engine. By the way I've just had mine replaced so this is how I know! Also, make sure the engine is placed properly when the mounts are replaced, there is room for adjustment and if not done correctly the manifolds can foul the chassis members under certain circumstances.

Just an outside thought, but when I first heard a tapping noise I thought the same as you then recalled hydraulic tappets I then tracked it down to be the exhaust header gaskets which need replacing. However the noise is so slight I will not do this until next year, or more likely I will not get Towerview to do this until next year

Something to consider anyhow, feel free to disregard as my mechanical knowledge is small (but ever increasing!)

Just be a bit carefull with leaky exhaust gaskets - with time the escaping gas can burn a path into the manifold or the head = bit more expensive than just gaskets!

Hmm

I have just HAD a new exhaust header on,

Removal of the precats and replacement with an elongated manifold pipe..

hope they didnt boink the gasket in process..

The exhaust gaskets if leaking "tick" under load at any speed, but the noise will reduce as you back off the throttle.

Yep in bad cases it can scrap the head and that is around £2K.... Worth getting addresed now. May only need a bolt tightening.

This is exactly what it does, under full throttle, there is a tap tap taap tap ,, like tappets, but muffled and deadend, goes immidiately i back off throttle..

but, as time goes on, the noise is lessening, maybe the breach os sealing itself ?

Or should I speak to Trick again..

see what you think on Tuesday..

Hi Jamie
Hmmmm sounds like it could be a leak ? wouldn't normally seal itself and would be supprised if Trick overlooked it.
If it is i'll send him a smelly packet through the post.
see you tuesday .

Boy, you never fail to cheer me up!! Mark at Towerview gave it the once over last month and the opinion was that it is so slight (i.e. you need to know to listen for it, otherwise you wouldn't notice) it can wait till the new year, which isn't long now I think about it.

My tappets (4L & 46K miles) started ticking, worst when hot. I tried changing the oil, checked the contact pads on the rocker arms (apparently they crack on 5L's)etc etc.
It turned out I was just putting off the inevitable, I spent 50 hours replacing camshaft and tappets.!!!
Sorry I bet you didn't want to here this.

In a way i do,

Mine was only ever when V.cold, and never otherwise,

and its gone totally now after the tuning work I had done, most liekly th enew oil has had a chance to bed in and 'get a lil dirty'.

Also to my surprise, a large amount of the 'metalic sounding' noise was actually the fan belt...

Quick bit of silicon lube and thats gone, she now nice and quiet again
