bear in mind the tapping could just be that rubber alternator belt with hard spots on it... £10 for a new one. Mine does that from time to time esp in summer... at first its the odd click, then as more hard spots appear (from the heat apparently) as the belt spins round you get multiple clicks... then when the belt has got quite a few spots its continuous and sounds like your engine is in trouble!!! usually goes after 5 to 10 minutes as the belt warms up (and softens?)... first time I heard it I panicked, but Mole Valley set me right replaced the belt and all was quiet (well, relatively, for a Chimaera with a sports exhaust )

I thought the exact same thing about the tappets, it only did it when cold and after 3 mins just stopped. I had the sepentine belt replaced and it cured it - I couldn't belive it! Started doing it again after 1000 miles replaced belt and it cured it again. It turns out that the adjuster thingy was worn and was causing the belt to ware unevenly. This was replaced and the noise has gone.
