they tested against rolling road and found it to be ~10% out all over the range,

so assume 70-72ish at 3000 rpm REAL SPEEDS

Assume 70-72ish at 3000 rpm, what cr@p mine reads in fifth 30mph per 1000rpm and 90mph = 3000rpm, but 28 mph per 1000rpm sounds dead on, taken in the top speed / maximum revs ie
157mph/5600 = 28mph per 1000rpm or
151mph/5600 = 27mph per 1000rpm , sorted ?.
based on your conclusion with a rev limiter at 5600rpm your top speed would be 72/3000*(5.6*1000)= 134.4 mph
10% out at that dyno test is a difference of keeping your licence or losing it !.

Jamie, I'm no TVR owner or driver, but that just don't make sense mate!

If 3000rpm is 80mph, and you add 10mph for every 500rpm then 4000rpm would be 100mph not 90!

I think it's a case of you know what your talking about, but what you wrote is complete b*ll*ks

hehe yeah,

silly mistake

80 3000 rpm
90 3500 rpm
100 4000 rpm
110 4500 rpm
120 5000 rpm
130 5500 rpm
140 6000 rpm
150 6500 rpm
160 bang rpm :P

Hi dodger, well it feels that quick. Seriously though, which is likely to be that far out?? How can I get them checked? If i'm over reading on the speedo then I,m possibly overreading on the odometer as well. Hell, i could be getting it serviced before i need to and the mileage on the car may not be as high after all.

Hi Tony. This is a fact (I think!): All speedos have to be calibrated by the manufacturer to read up to 10% high, but never low. So at 3000rpm it can read anywhere between 83 - 91mph. Best thing to do is follow a pal in a newish major league car and get him to flash hazzards at say, 50, 60, 70, (80, 90,....) and compare what yours reads. Make mental adjustment or mark up the dial. The cause may be the gap between the transponder and pick-up at the diff.

The gap should be 0.1 - 0.2mm I believe.

well look at is this way.. if 90 = 3500 rpm and 80 = 3000 rpm, then by definition:

70mph = 2500rpm
60mph = 2000rpm
50mph = 1500rpm
40mph = 1000rpm
30mph = 500rpm
20mph = engine off...rpm
10mph = ? time travel ?

sorry..

Matt.

Why would you want to do 10mph in 5th ?

I DID say 5th Gear!

Right,

just been out on the drive, and got these speeds (slippy ice on my drive h'occifer, allows me to move on the spot!!)

70mph @ 2650

80mph @ 3000

90mph @ 3500

100mph @ 3900

Images are slightly out due to time the 7650 takes to actually take the piccy from pressing the button (all images taken by passenger!)

SO, seems my 500rpm/10mph in 5th isnt exactly spot on, but isnt THAT far out either,

I think that given i spend most of my time at 80/90, i just got used to seeing them at 500rpmish junctures.

Anyway

There we go.

Nice one..

I would humbly suggest the following then:

30mph = 1170rpm
60mph = 2340rpm
70mph = 2730rpm
80mph = 3120rpm
90mph = 3510rpm
100mph = 3900rpm.

the only point I was making with my 10 mph "speed" comment earlier is that the scale has to equal 0 mph at 0 rpm, not 0 mph at negative rpm.

Cheers,
Matt

Nice pics of the speedo!!
I too have a '98 Chim 450, and my speedo and rev counter tally exactly with what I see on your pics at the same speeds.
Would be interesting to see how the 2 other Chim varients compared!

Matt, that equates to a constant 25.6mph/1000rpm which is not what it's meant to be. So, I humbly suspect something's wrong? This is what we should all see:

rpm.______mph.(indicated)

2000______55 - 60
3000______83 - 90
4000______110 - 120

If we don't then I suspect the speedo/transponder needs attention.

Or clean the stepper motor.
