Hi,

Friendly MOT tester noted that the front discs were nearing the wear limit back in September, thought it's time I did something about it.

They look OK to me, but I'll measure them to see whether they need doing urgently or when I get around to it.

Any one know how thick they're supposed to be?

Cheers,

Andy

I think the width of your dics is unimportant ...... it's what you do with them that counts!!!

You can see the amount of wear from the step at the edge of the swept area. If it's worn a long way the disk may have become grooved, which is more significant.

Hmm.

Can't see any noticable grooving and they both measure 0.9" (about 22.9mm) which I think is probably more than 5mm each side. I'll get the whels off and have a good look sometime, but it's probably OK for a while yet then.

Can't help wonder where non specialist MOT testers get the minimum thickness dimensions from!

It's going in for a service in a few weeks and I don't want the "the front discs needed doing, here's a huge bill for something you could easily do yourself" scenario!

Cheers,

Andy

There definately is a minimum dimension for disc thickness - but sorry, can't remember what it is. Phone Quick-Fit or Rapid-Fit (Ford) they should know. 23mm sounds quite healthy to me though............

matt 74 said: From memory i was told each 'side' of the disc should be about 5mm min although this is not excatly accurate, recently had mine skimmed at local engineers for £20! now as good as new and above min thickness. Remember they are Ford discs should you require a standard replacement.

It's almost cheaper to buy new ones at that price, though. The standard discs should cost no more than £15 a corner, and you may well be able to get them cheaper.

Minimum thickness is 24MM, You can buy a pair of MK III ford escort front 240MM discs and pads for £35, 260MM discs maybe a couple of quid more, easy diy job 1-1/2 hours to change both sides.
