Is it bad, when driving through little country towns and villages with the top off, to keep the Chimp in second (when third would do) so that the sound echoing off the cottages is just that bit closer to bellow than burble?

I personally think it's rude not to make as much noise as you can in that situation!

I always drop a gear when I'm driving through tunnels or narrow roads, brings a big to my face!

Think of it as doing the community a favour, I did a quick survey and 97.7% of people questioned said that they love the sound of a V8.
So keep up the good work.

:woolyheaded mode on: Totally agree with all the above, and would go further by saying you have an obligation as a decent upstanding citizen to do so.

Clearly with a car of such power it is morally/socially correct to indicate to all that you are coming so all the ickle kiddies can stop playing marbles and such like, in the centre of the road.

But also it would be a clear case of social exclusion to withhold the experience from those less fortunate or able to enjoy the experience themselves :woollyheaded mode off:

hear hear!

I may be 2 cylinder short in the S3, but it's the principle of the thing!

Drove past a school yesterday, and the head was obviously talking to the children outside... dropped from 4th to 2nd and gave it some stick!

Managed this twice in 2 days.
Made 2 people jump, yesterday and 1 today with the popping and banging on over-run.
I have it off to a tee now and can induce it at will especially in this cold weather.

I honestly see it as a Public Service, brightening up peoples days.

I think it's a contribution to road safety - everyone hears you coming and don't pull out/step out into your
path, thus avoiding accidents.

Er....plus......straws......grasping for.......

Marginal safety aspects in that:

your presence will be heard (ie small children will flee for cover and wild animals will cry)

being in a lower gear will provide more flexibility for deceleration and acceleration

you will be more aware, and thus be concentrating on the speed limits

er, uh, DOH jfdi!

The exhaust note is referred to as an

"Early warning System" . . . ie

"I'M COMING THRO'!"

being also an ex-biker, this topic has a very familiar 'tone' i.e. trying to justify sharing our sweet engine noises with others - whether they like it or not!!
Sports exhaust anyone...

Well Gents, Thank you for your help and support in this matter. You have allayed what doubts I might have had and I shall be able to carry out my obligations to the hamlet communities of the shires without self-reproach in future.

By judicious use of the throttle in my terribly ill Golf I can engineer a significant backfire, which is more than capable of lighting up the night sky and blasting any errant children into orbit.

Is this the same thing?
