I'm now one step closer to TVR ownership - I'm testdriving a Chimaera 4.0 & maybe a 4.5 (if they've got one) this coming Saturday from Westover sports cars in Dorrrrrrzet. Can anyone advise as to any typical things to check for or point me towards an old thread covering the same stuff?
Car's I'm trying are post '97 (not sure on exact year) with the new gearbox - hopefully try one with PAS and one without but apparently it all depends on what cars they actually get in this week!

If it smells inside walk away - any decent owner will not have let the car leak and carry on leaking/rotting the carpets. What else did they not pay attention to ...

Look in the front wheel arches/engine bay at the condition of the front wishbones - they may be corroded - even on a newer car, unless the car has been properly looked after/cleaned/waxoyled etc.

Also, treat the throttle carefully and feed the power in - don't just plant your foot. You hear about all those single car TVR accidents - this is usually why.

Well done - look for obvious damage repairs, evidence of leaks (stained carpets etc.), unusual tyre wear, Electric bits not working (windows, mirrors, wipers etc). Other than that do all the usual checks you'd do buying any other car

Get a copy of SHpub's bible http:www.tvrbooks.co.uk for more specific help.

Good points already raised but I'd add history (service [not necessarily TVR dealer but specialised independent is OK, IMHO], bills etc.) also HPI check is essential.

Happy hunting

If you've never driven one before, try not to be overwhelmed by the experience and have it remove your critical faculties! Yes, the noise, the wind, the speed, all are fabulous, but you don't notice the defects until you get it home and the cheque's cleared!
