Well this is my 1000 post and it is all good news.

We got the body off!!!!!!!!!!

Bit if a nightmare at times but with lots of perserverence and a lot of crawling around (by paul) the body 'just lifted off'...it was that easy.

The maniflds had to come off in the end to clear the foot wells...and one or two wires needed a bit of extra help but we got there in the end

Thanks to all of those that helped, john, johnathon, paul and kim...what you doing next weekend...we need to get the body back on!!!

All thats left now is the engine strip and rebulid, respray, retrim and errrrrm anything else i have missed...!

Good news is the mrs has told me that i cant sell it when it is finished!!!
Bad news is the out rigger on the drivers side is shot along with the return to the main chassis rail...bit more welding needed than i thought!

Oh and of course Ian for the supervision...cant beleive you left your good lady sat in the tuscan all that time...

Yes we have got some really good pictures...most of them have got pauls legs sticking out from the underside of the car and ther were a couple of cringe times but apart from that it went well.

A little bit of advice for anyone that might be thinking about doing a body lift...dont go for the 9" one...go the whole way and take the body off, you can access everything and it is a good time to do all those 'little' jobs you have been putting off..!

Wont be able to touch the computer?
Luckily for me i have got one of those 36hrs in a day watches...!
Totally forgot about the sarnies...sorry.

Managed to get most of one rear corner stripped out...just struggling to get the drive shaft out of the diff. All the rear brake pipes are off and there was no corrosion on any of them so i might reuse them...
Every nut and bolt is undone now so all i have to do is knock them out when i take the wishbones, gearbox and diff out.

Ray_Von
That is not true...i spend my time at work trawling the internet looking for cheap parts for TVR's and i have managed to find loads!!!
Anyway where were you....oh, forgot, maintenance/fitters = keep clear of hard work...hehe

Tesstickles
Had a word with clare and the wwas not happy about the idea of having the body in the front room, its bad enough having half the interior in the dinning room!!!
Mind you i might be able to make a cot out of the boot???

I have found somewhere to post pics so here goes...

This one shows the front of the os outrigger, the main outrigger tube has rusted through and the top of the tube has collapsed about 4" along. The lower cross brace going from the corner to the main lower chassis rail has also rusted through and will need replacing. The mounting plate that the front floor bolt goes through is very weak and easily bent.

This one shows the os chassis running along just below the exhaust manifold. Due to badly perished engine mounts on both side the manifolds were hitting the chassis. This had worn away the coating and is probably the cause of the corrosion.
Luckily the rust is only surface so the metal is quite solid.

This last one shows the overall condition of the rear of the chassis. The outriggers look quite rusty but it is all on the surface, all the bolts undid easy enough.

I will post some more pics when i get the chassis back and start to reassemble. Hopefully i will have everything off the chassis this week and get it over to the blasters.

In the end there were 8 of us.

This was much more than is really needed but it was handy having the extra hands. Two bolts had sheared at the back end so it was stuch there and we had a few issues with the manifolds and one or two cables that were still attached.

You could probably do it with 4 but that would be a bit of a struggle...also i had the doors off so that was a lot less weight but it did flex a lot.

If you are going to do this be prepared for a shock when you first see your chassis...!!!!

that daddy said:
yours looks far worse you will find if you really poke that area around you will go straight thru im sure(this is something you guys on here should keep an eye on, the offside seems more rust prone in that area)

I dont know why but it seems the offside suffers more than the nearside.
I had a poke around this section and actually used a center punch and medium hammer and have gone all the way round the tube and it is very solid so i dont have any worries there.

my out riggers were fine when i brought the car!
Within 6 months of purchase i painted the whole chassis, then in october i was going to do it again and noticed the hole.

Oh and i have just been out to the garage again and hit the top tube with a chipping hammer and put a hole in the tube!!!
Looks like a top tube is going to need replacing as well...not to worry... biglaugh

FWIW, my theory is that water runs down the inner wings and drips on to these rails (I was once under the car when it was raining ) My solution was to run a thin strip of adhesive rubber along the inner wings to channel the water to drain away at the front of the car. I havent had any probs in 2 years ~ but I also had ceramic exhausts & POR15 around the same time ~ I do think it has kept a lot of standing water from dropping on to the chassis rail tho.

Dave

Forgot last night... The other prob here could be the damned bonnet vents ~ I really considered putting a sheet profile under them to drain the water (with mesh round the outside [unseen] and as an alternative to the common meshing up). It looks like the vents were added in design cos the fg was close to manifolds ~ but they let water drip onto the manifolds & then chassis. Never did anything about this just one of those things I'd benn thinking about, I'll make a fg profile sometime....

I was going to coat the chassis rail with some of that heat reflective material (same as the stuff on the inner wings), but the rubber channel sounds a good idea as well.
