Chimaera insurance

34, full NCB, HP15 Postcode, clean license costs me £606 (after 5 years of owning the car - I think they load new owners, esp if no RWD sportscar experience). Includes all track days and European cover. Quote went up to £1,000 when I wanted to put the girlfriend on (ahem, older than me and 6 points TS10 and SP50 ). It's funny, her TT costs £950 to insure and they don't load it putting me on her policy.
be prepared for a shock insurers don't seem to like us up north. 36yrs old full no claims garaged (£25 difference) 7000 miles a year with 30 yr old girlfriend (£30 difference) kept at DH2 valued £20000 Quotes range from £690-£1500 with tesco seeming best at £755 due to excess still to try mannings and sunninghill but as they quoted about £1200 last year not holding out much hope

Sounds like a v.comptetive quote, who is it with out of interest, or are you keeping it quiet in case us other Tiv owners bump up the premiums?!
Chris
Definitely use a cover over the hood in winter, you will have to weed the Mohair otherwise and water will surely leak into cabin from somewhere, creating a sort of smelly bathtub effect. The paint will be more resilient to the elements though, so a full cover is probably not necessary and may even cause damage in high winds or strong sun.
I did a lot of shopping around last year when I bought my 5.0 Chim. Found no-one came close to Tesco or AJ Manning, including Footman James who'd previously been unbeatable on my BMW. I went with Mannings for the track-day cover and because they understand TVR's, explaining the alarm not being strictly CAT 1 caused much mirth elsewhere (not). I was afraid the 5,000 mile limit was a bit tight and sure enough I had to pay to lift it after doing 2,500 miles around Scotland 2 months after buying it.
My premium was £520 for 5000 miles (£210 extra for unlimited).
I had rear-wheel drive experience, not only the 220bhp BMW, which I'd had for 5 claim free years.
Full NCD.
SP50 3-pointer in '99.
Wife as named driver (reduced quotes by £50 or so, even though she has SP30).
Second car.
Garaged, but made £20 difference with Tesco if not.
NCD not protected (made shocking £110 difference - currently in process of claiming due to uninsured driver ploughing into me, so regretting that a bit, but £100 is still a lot and I'll be claiming for the extra premium next year from sh*tlegs).
Happy hunting,
Andy

Maybe A Manning have changed their policy, but when I asked for a quote (over a year ago mind) they would not put my wife on the insurance as she had not driven enough miles (>5000) in the TVR so was too inexperienced.
Judging by the low miles that a lot of TVR owners do, many of them don't have enough experience then.
Luckily Sunninghill are more sensible:
4.0 Chimaera, 6k miles, Full protected NCB, age 33, garaged in Kent, £650 approx (can't remember exactly).

Just insured my Chimaera 4.0l with Sunninghill Insurance Brokers who do speacialist TVR cover. Nice guys and cheapest quote by quite a long shot. Also do cheap deals on RAC cover.
Found that a lot of the others loaded up the cost as I had no previous TVR experience. Into 6th day of ownership and loving it to bits, can't wait to get home from work and take it out for a spin.

Hi DadRock,
Regards the cover, Leven Tech do a very good one that just fits over the roof and windows (attaches around the wing mirrors and a flap goes into boot), it takes less than a minute to fit and keeps foof looking good.
I bought mine through the wanted section here on P/H for £75, but they are about £150 new - well worth it.
Regards insurance, I'm paying less than £500 through Mannings, but I'm an old sod - girlfriends might get it cheaper, but you'll find that wifes ALWAYS COST MONEY !
