Every now and then at the traffic lights or waiting at a junction, the engine will threaten to cut out. It is much more than the normal TVR variation. Usually when facing uphill.
Any thoughts?

You`ll probably be advised to clean the stepper motor first, it seems to be the advice for sorting many similar problems

I'd certainly advise cleaning the stepper motor

I've never dealt with the stepper motor before. Apologies for my ignorance but how would I identify it & where would I locate it in a '94 Chimaera....?

The stepper motor is located at the back of the Plenum chamber (the big silver thing on top of the engine with "400" or similar on)almost under the grill by the windscreen. You will need to take out and clean (30mm spanner) but be careful as its a plastic housing. The conical valve will need to be cleaned with white spirit - but I would recommend you get a copy of Steve Heaths "bible" for details about anything Chimaera, it really is invaluable. Try www.tvrcc.com and purchase online (you don`t have to be a member).

I stress I have not needed to do this myself but looked in the book to give you an idea!!

incorrigible - I'm in SE London.

iandbeech - Yes I looked at buying the book today. I did once study mechanical engineering but did not put it to much use at the time!

Thanks both - Crouchy

There's a fair few around there, try NCS, or Lake (they'll be happy I told you) They're in Bromley

If you're ever in West Sussex, give me a call

I have been having intermittant idle issues, always covering the throttle at the lights! Mine was poor air flow meter contacts,or leads, give em a wiggle. I can now poodle along at 900 rpm in 5th and no probs at the lights. Oh cleaning the contacts didnt work, solder did.

david- can you elaborate a bit- i had doddgy idle with the car stalling 90% of the time at lights- i cleaned the stepper and its a lot better but still not perfect- it will still stall if left for longer than 20-30secs without a blip of the gas.

whats the process for the steps you took?

Crouchy and all - it may be worth your while reading answers to my thread in "General TVR stuff & gossip" regarding my thoughts on regular unleaded v Optimax fuel.

Sorry that wasnt very clear was it? My case, if i wiggled the connector block on the air flow meter, the engine would die or at least attempt to, didnt do it all the time, maybe heat related or even dampness. I firstly cleaned the contacts but this didnt work. I then cut off the plug and soldered directly onto the air flow meter contacts. So it could of been dirty contacts that would not clean up or dirty crimp to wire contact, or a break in one of the cables close to the plug. Anyway, iam very happy although if for any reason the air flow meter has to be replaced it will have to soldered.
