After much deliberating over the last month on power upgrades.I have decided to go for the basic root to start off with.Ive got the 10th of june earmarked for a Tornado chip fitted and rolling road set up at power engineering. What i would like to know is,has anyone else had this done, and what are the benifits,i.e quicker throttle response and a smoother running engine etc. Many thanks Mark.

Have a search on the TVR forums. There are several thread about the Tornado chip, all good I believe.

When fitted in conjunction with a Mark Adams rolling road session, it improves engine smoothness on part throttle and idling, increases fuel economy and performance. It can also be tuned to correct lean mixtures at the top end (common on 500s) and is more or less compulsary for any engine modifications. I've also heard that it solves world hunger and cures cancer.

I'll see you there Mark, I'm booked in for 1:30 to get my Tornado chip/P404 cam/solids lifters/carbon trumpets tuned by Mr Adams

To the extent that I could go and buy a 5 litre, have it chipped, and it would be as smooth and progressive in daily traffic as a 4.0 instead of an accident waiting to happen if you're a bit clumsy with the throttle (that'll be me )?

Depends on the particular 5 & 4.0. Possibly

To true, this very man has a 4.5L that after chipping was noticeably quicker than my 5.0L Griff (but to be honest that Griff was never that quick...)

There's a scan here on PH somewhere of a power chart (before and after) of my 4.0 Chimaera (as was) which had Mark's chip fitted. It gained an extra 39bhp and was MUCH smoother in traffic.

Go for it.

I've heard the figure of ~£600 mentioned at various times, although since you're paying for Mark's time and the rolling road time, the cost is variable rather than fixed. Or at least that is what I have been given to understand.

There's 2 ways you can go - get Mark's "best guess" chip, which is an average of all the chips he has done for that particular engine size/type, or get Mark to do a bespoke tuning for you on a rolling road.

As I live in Scotland, I got the best guess chip (installed in a few minutes), which cost me £350 + VAT.
I would recommend the bespoke tuning if you can manage it, as that is most likely to give the best results.

The cost is Mark's time, the cost of hiring the rolling road, all plus VAT. My bill was £750 or thereabouts in 1999.

Will the Tornado chip smooth out a 4.3 around town as well?

As far as I'm aware a lot of the extra mapping is around the low end to improve manners at low speed, apparently thats the difficult bit, then its improved all through out the range as well, so simply yes to the question. However speak to Mark he'll tell you exactly what he can and can't do.

My 4.0 and a friends 4.5l are both booked in for the 20th June. I would be very interested to see your results posted for comparison.

Hope it goes well.

Just one point - If the Tornado chip improves the all round performance - Did TVR get it that wrong in the first place?

not really, it's another case of cost cutting, if every car had a 'mapped' chip the costs would be higher so they have a 'standard' chip. MA fine tunes the chip to your particular engine (which are all hand built and vary) I've just got my car back from V8 Developmnets with the new cam/trumpets and larger plenum.......it pulls like a train on steroids and top gear acceleration will see the needle whizzing round past 120mph in no time (it's gonna get me busted)Acceleration in 5th gear is like 3rd and it feels 'on cam' all the time. It is a lumpy twat at the moment though, which will be put right after my rolling road session

Found it!! The whole story is here and here's the dyno pic....

I can vouch for the chip, the car (mine now, Maneks old one) is smooth in traffic (I do a fair bit of driving in London) plus I get pretty good MPG (about 23-25 mpg) and it's fast!

How do you book a rolling road session and chip upgrade with Mark Adams? I feel like treating my 450.
