After a couple of months of putting up with a slight clonk on take off I finally got round to checking the Driveshafts this weekend. I had previously thought the noise was the top diff mount but I had a look at mine and the bolts were tight and the bush looked okay.

Symptoms were a clonk when going from first to reverse and then sometimes when starting off and it tended to get louder as the car warmed up.

Anyway had a look at the CV joints and I had noticable play in 3 of 4, of course I should have suspected these earlier ( Car has done 72K). I guess as the grease inside the joint warmed up it would allow the play to increase, not something which would happen with a bad diff top mounting.

Tripped to the local motor factors to track down the joints and found out that they are 108mm outside diameter, 28 spline driveshaft joints which were listed for a Granada (They are the largest outside diameter CV joints listed for a Ford. The joints I got were from XL and are their part number C3018 £53.25 inc VAT each including the boots. Recognise that they may not be quite as good as the original Ford joints but I think they should be ok.

I'm now enjoying putting the power down without the annoying clonk! Hope this may help any others out there with the same problem.
