Last week I changed my Elise for a Chim 500. It goes without saying that the drive is different but over the last week I have found the car occassionally hesitates in 3rd and 4th gear. Especially under reasonably hard acceleration. If I am up around the 5,500 rev mark in third change to 4th and get back on the power there is occassionally a second before the power is released.

I am willing to accept it could be my driving but if anybody else has had a similar problem I would appreciate any advice. In my first week of ownership I am trying to avoid TVR garages!

Stu welcome to TVR-land!

There's a number of possibilities but the things that spring to mind are to check HT leads, both for the connection and condition and clean connections under the dizzy. Plugs and HT leads and coil all have a hard life in the 500 and when mine have been replaced it has been like a transformation!

could be a dodgy throttle pot, you can put a meter (preferably an analogue one) accross it an check you get a steady change in resistance as you move the throttle pedal

cheers guys. It has certainly been an enjoyable first week even with the occasional hesitation.

Stuart,

Your 500 is not by chance the Cosmos Blue P plater just sold by Adrian Blyth. This was my pride and joy for a couple of years until I sold it back to Adrian a few weeks back - Honda S2000 arrives in a couple of weeks (need an everyday driver).

Try a new set of HT leads.

Yep something electrical.

Mine used to do this, they changed the leads and the coil (under warranty luckily) and it was fine.

Something to do with huge underbonnet temperatures when she was overheating knackering the coil and causing it to leak or something.

yep old ones do start breaking down in hot temps. I was in Saudi being driven around some dunes by a mate when his 4 x 4 conked out, we lifted the bonnet for a look when this old Arab sheep sh, er, herder came up and started rabbiting away at us, next thing I know he's chucked a bottle of water over the coil. "Well that's fcuked it" I thought, did the trick though and started first time.

Not so sure about the leads diagnosis

You say it's OK at high revs, but when you change up (revs go down) and it's then you get the problem ??

BTW decent leads (I've got the Magnecor race jobbies) do make a difference but @ £200 (including new plugs extenders cap and arm) is hardly the sort of cash you want to spend on the off chance

Not the P plate - It's a 99 T plate in Paris blue. getting used to the colour now.

High revs are fine, its when the revs drop as you change up the gears and get back on the power.

Thanks for all the advice - I will have a proper look this weekend.
