running costs..

looking at a few of your profiles on running costs which is great as its giving me a budget plan to help me get my first TVR :-) and running it all year :-)))

this may be a thick question but some of you are servicing on 3k miles for oil changes, whereas all i can find on actual dealer sites etc about servicing is for 6k/12k/24k ones...is it just cos you want to or is it worth doing so for a matter of course, and views on to do or not if im planning on running yearly??

There are only two types of service for Chimaeras, 6k and 12k - the 12k one details a lot more things and is more expensive obviously. They both have to be done every 6000 miles.

The details of the services and how they differ from each other can be found on the servicing page of the TVR dealer in Henley, Oxon.

Oil changes are obviously then every 6000 miles but some owners like to do it every 3000 ... the engine will benefit of course from having nice fresh clean oil moving about in it - it's ust some do and some don't IYSWIM .

TVR have 6k, 12k, 24k servicing for the Chim'. Some do just a 6k and 12k service where the 12k follows the schedule for the 24k. I get the oil changed every 3k to keep the engine in tip top order. If it were absolutely necessary, then it would be part of the TVR service schedule.

Some engines do need the cam replaced in the 40-50k range through wear to the rear most lobes of the cam. If I get well past this period without issue, then the 3k oil change is worth it. I've done 47k so far, so I'll keep you posted.

If you do less than 6K a year (which IMHO is a disgrace to the marque) then you should have it serviced at least once a year anyway.

That is unlikely as most first time owners of TVRs find themselves doing very long detours in the beginning and adding lots of miles very quickly!

Anything less than changing oil ever 6k is a waste of time (unless doing so few mile per annume you shouldn't really be having the car as Rob sez)- they use oil in any case so in effect if you are using it regularly you are 'changing the oil all the time!' Only do dealerservice if money no object -other wise a good independent about 2/3 I suppose.

But you ain't changing the oil filter! the result of putting clean oil in a dirty engine is dirty oil.

Sorry Al, but you're wrong

Mineral oil (nonsynthetic) especially degrade over time, that's why old service intervals used to be 3000 miles or six months whichever is the shorter. A filters life depends on how much goes through it and how much it has to filter out

Still possibly a false economy not to replace it but if I had a car that did 500 miles on mineral oil in six months I'd change the oil not the filter

Actually I wouldn't, I'd replace the oil with a fully synth and the filter and do the next oil service in a years time but you know what I mean

An if you want advice on what oil to put in, be prepared for a lot of reading

Only if you put in that really thin stuff (some people swear by it (Mobil1)) but IMHO any oil that runs so thin when it's hot to give you <5psi oil presure isn't ideal
