My Dad has a 99 chimaera500 and I can't convince him to go for a sports exhaust. Most sports exhausts I've been told about involve simply removing the silencer box and replacing it with straight through pipes, but people say this involves loss of power and failure at MOT tests. Companies such as wedge automotive supply full systems, but do they make a big difference from the standard ones and are they worth the money!!
Would appreciate it, if anyone can help as I need more rumble!!
Cheers

Hmm..
Fully agree with Dad, a 99 Chim 500 one does need to worry about loss of power...

And what it comes to more rumble, it is not worth the money and trouble - not to mention a risk of failure at MOT tests and informing the insurer of the modification.

So your are allowed to drive it?
Appreciate that !

I was under the impression that TVR fitted a sports exhaust. What else would you call it?

Eh?? Most sports conversions involve opening the back section, weldng a piece of pipe in and then welding the back section back up again. The sound is fantastic and I doub't very much there would be a loss in power. After all the process removes restrictions.
Regarding the MOT, I was under the impressison that the test for leaks not noise, you might have an issue on a track day though.
Just tell him to do it!

As an M.O.T. tester I can confirm that noise does not enter into an M.O.T. test whatsoever , as long as the cats are functioning and the emisions are within guidelines - chop away !!! But you will be refused track entry to most places due to the db levels.:d

I have a 4L Chimp, and had the conversion on mine done, after about 2 months. You simply can't beat the noise. GET IT DONE...!!! YOU WILL LOVE IT...!!!

MOT, hhhmmm interesting one that. Only had 1 place fail me on the noise. At the main TVR garage who did the conversion in the first place (eh..? work that out then..?) Failed it on excess noise...

I've checked into it since, and apparently, as long as the car has the original exhaust, and has no holes i.e the pipe look standard, the have no real reason to fail it. MOT garages NO NOT undertake any sort of sound testing...

Mine now goes to a garage who preps race cars, so no problem now...!!

For your Info, my 4L produces 108 db at 4500rpm 1/2 meter from the car. Too loud for track (quiet) days, and way to loud for Bedofrd Autodrome, as told by Jonathan Palmer him self... That was a surprise...!!!!

I've expereinced no loss of power, that I can tell..

I have had that mod done to my Griff, it is not louder in decibels but has more character...howls like a banshee on full song and rumbles, pops and bangs on overrun, has passed an MOT no problem (the cats take care of your emissions not your silencer)......JFDI!

Guys (& Gals)

How much, and who would you recommend to do it?

Like it needs to be any louder anyway.....

Just to emphasise the noise problem... Most track days now require 100 db or less. There are still some noisy days but the cost and availability is getting lower.

Given a choice of a noisy car and no track days and track days, there is no competition: track days anytime.

And all of you who have made the mod, I trust you have informed your insurers as this is classed as a performance mod and failure to do so will possible invalidate any claim.

What are the exact instructions for the mod as I am 99% sure I want to get it done , a fellow Chim driver popped in to see me in work yesterday and he had either a modded or a sports exhaust but he bought it like it so didn't know but it sounded absolutely stunning. I have someone who can physically do it , just need instructions. Ta

Mike forget the noise level . Kirkistown has no noise test . Just remember taking Detbors Dip at 105 mph + , then hard on the brakes for Colonial .
What speed will get the S round it and will you be in the Chim 500 & your dad in the S , two for the price of one special !
Roll on Kirkistown track day 11th May & 15th June.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I'm still unsure what to do. Is it worth the extra noise, to face rejection for noise levels at a trackday????
I spoke to the guys at Thames Valley Race Tech, who supply two 58mm pipe sections to fit into the silencer box, roughtly 100 quid fitting plus vat.
Colin, maybe when Mervyn sells his car he'll put the standard exhaust back on and sell me his sports exhaust!!!!
S should fly round Kirkiston this year, hopefully I won't spin it at 90+mph going round debtors, like I did in the Chimaera!!!!!
See u on Sunday
Cheers Mike

My test for doing anything on my cars these days is simple: Does it make it go faster?

A sports exhaust won't but a track day (and some tuition) will make me able to to drive quicker and safer. Conclusion: no contest.
