Been advised that the bushes have gone on my front wishbones. What sort of money should I be looking at to get these replaced? I also remember that the ones that are provided by TVR are not galvanised/go rusty so am I best off getting some better ones fitted than the standard - I don't want to be doing this again and again?!

Cheers

Worn bushes are not the same as worn wishbones. Wishbones are around 300 pnd ish where as bushes are around 30 pnds ish + labour etc etc.

Yeah, bushes are rubber (well some sort of synthetic rubber IIRC). Good luck finding galvanised ones

They break down because of the heat in the engine bay I believe.

Poly bushes seem to last better than the original rubber ones, you can get various grades. Unless you're going to spend a lot of time on track you should probably go for a grade similar to the original rubbers. Galvanising applies to (metal) wishbones rather than (plastic) bushes. Sounds like you are just talking about replacing the bushes which is a relatively small job. If the wishbones are corroded and need replacing this is a completely different problem and will be more expensive.

Depending on how old you car is I wouldn't use a main dealer to do the job. My dealer quoted £800 + VAT to change my bushes 'cos they said they would not how long it would take them to get the old ones off! A Specialist Garage quoted £300 for the whole job!

i got qouted fortunes for the same thing by a tiv dealer and i am still bowled over by the ordacity...
(still will get 'em done tho' but i'll be buggered if i'm payin' that!)
get a bloke with some ramps and have a look yourself. i bet the people who told you about the wish bushes were tvr dealers... thats cos' they know that
1. you're probably wanting to look after you're beast as best you can so :
2. they can qoute you the price of an alfa to do what may not even NEED to be done just yet (bear in mind that if you or any owners have EVER been over a hump-backed bridge then the bushes could "do with replacing" accordong to a v.well known tiv dealer....)

Recently had front wishbone bushes replaced at Peninsula with their own poly / stainless bushes Cost was about £ 150 and they seem good. My wishbones were o.k but advised cost of £45 each if needed replacing

I was shocked by the state of my upper front wishbones (rust) and after spending a Sunday sanding one down and repainting it decided to buy some new ones.

The new ones were £44.50 each excluding VAT. The bushes are press fitted into the ends of the wish bones, I think they were about £7 each, so if you were keeping your old ones you would have to get them out somehow & press in the new ones. The TVR Centre parts dept. very kindly pressed the new ones into the wishbones for me for free.

The total bill for wishbones, new bushes, washers and bolts was less than £150.

This was for the uppers only - I suspect the lowers are more expensive (being larger) & more difficult to fit.

I am thinking of having nylon bushes fitted (Tower View Race Services) do they make the ride much harsher and increase the noise over potholes etc?

Nylon, or Poly? Nylon is virtually rigid and is not recommended for a road car. Poly is far more common and comes in various grades from soft as rubber to hard as Nylon. The poly bushes Tower View fitted for me are reasonably firm but perfectly acceptable for normal road use.

Thanks - Poly it is then, I used nylon on a competion car some years back and they were way too harsh for road use.

Soooo, if I wanted to get my front wishbones (upper and lower) replaced, with new bushes, what price am I talking if I don't go to a TVR dealer?

Not much of my paycheck left this month after a few other things sorted out on the car already!

Had my front bushes replaced last year with Poly U type at a total cost of £300. This included replacing a complete top wishbone due to totally seized bush. Wishbone was £45. Make sure full steering geometry check is done afterwards. Labour is the main cost.
Looks to me like the failure is purely the amount of stress the rubber units take, my front suspension had moved backwards to the point where the wishbone metal work was touching the chassis bracket - uprated brakes heavy braking

Exactly what's happening to mine. I'm out of the country for a while but will get it done as soon as I get back in time for some warmer weather!

Cheers

I had exactly the same problem, replaced by Peninsula -- including labour AND replacing front wishbones, cost was around £420 ISTR. A good job was done.

You don't need a jack to have a look -- just open the bonnet and you can see where the top wishbones articulate with the chassis.
