Guys - many thanks for the pictures..

Ant what was the belt reference number and length on yours ?
My belt is a 7PK1035, which on seeing these photo's I could run shorter.

So I have measured and could run about 20-25 mm shorter.

it won't go on the bolt you describe J, not that way round anyway. It will foul the web.

There, that's a challenge for you hehe
As I thought . .. Seems it's not that well designed. The bracket is great and I really like the look of your set ups. I just don't like the crescent adjuster having to be fixed that way, or at least having to be undone at both points to adjust, not that you would have to do it that often.

I'm sure it could be improved . . . a project I see before you Johno (in a Yoda stylee) hehe
TBH, I can't see one of these belts stretching to any degree, although I suppose they do lose material, and hence thickness, with use...
I suppose it will depend on mileage and use as with everything. The advantage or disadvantage of the spring loaded tensioner is that you don;t notice the stretch as it's automatically taken up . . It'll interesting to see whether many adjustments are necessary with the other, but like you I doubt it.

Thinking about Johno's criticisms of the locking bracket, it would be easy enough to come up with a nice turnbuckle style replacement adjuster using a pair of spherical bearing rod ends with opposing threads into an ally rod - a bit like the link rods commonly used on motorcycle rearset footrests (and a bit like the SH suspension droplinks). Put me down for one Johno, when you get making wink

You need to source two new screws for the side nearest the inner wing, think they are 3/8 UNC but someone will pipe up if that's wrong - the countersunk one is the same thread size and length as what's needed (John Eales gave me a couple but I asked as I was there), and the countersunk one fits in the third hole which will be directly and very close behind the rear of the alternator if you end up with the alternator in its lowest position (you may need to trim the 'pips' off the plastic cover and slightly reroute the wiring - careful of the big fat +12v lead)... the bracket will need countersinking if you want to set it up this way and John provides that screw as they're not so easy to source and not always needed.

If you have previously changed the exhaust manifold screws to the stainless ARP jobbies, as many have, your old screws are the right thread and length if you kept any wink

I've pinched the photo from a German owners site, but it shows one solution, although too long I think for the JE bracket. You'll note it's a left hooker, pre-serp with aircon, I think . . Wonder if it was the factories solution or a later addition. . .

Here's the bracket . . . I presume this is the same as other pre serps?

Sorry Johno, that's vomit

There are some eye-end turnbuckles of various sizes and lengths on fleabay, although I think all I have seen are too long for the JE bracket unless different fixings are picked up... might have a gander if I get bored over the break

That arrangement above pre serp with aircon has a land rover style pre serp water pump - not the SD1 style as per all other non aircon pre serps, and I think that 'interesting' belt arrangement is original spec.

I agree completely, just been surfing around having a look for inspiration - or what not to produce.

Opposing threaded rod ends has to be the way as suggested . . Mines away for 3wks now and I've got a tonne of stuff to do just to get it back on the road, it's going to be a month before I have a go, but I'll see what I can do.
