Nearly didn't burn off a Golf V6!

Hi all,
I don't normally race against other cars, but it had been a late finish at work, and I'd been stuck behind the slowest drivers in the world.
So, when the slow car at the front of the moving queue pulled off at the start of a mile-long open stretch, I decided to overtake the Golf V6 in front too.
Although clearly my 5L pulled past him, blow me, he didn't diminish in the rear view mirror anywhere near as fast as I would have expected/liked. He even had a passenger to add to the weight!
Now I didn't start out to go hell for leather. I was in 3rd at about 30mph at the start and didn't downshift. But still, should I be expecting better from my 5L?
I couldn't hear how much he was thrashing his car as it was drowned out by the bellowing dragon at 4.5K rpm. :-)
He obviously felt a bit miffed though, as when I backed off after a while, and he eventually caught me up he was welded to the rear end for a while.

Yeah, but we were already rolling, so it wouldn't give any traction advantage really.

I should be 4.1 secs! Maybe I'd have had more advantage from a standstill with all that torque?

Not only that but 3rd at 30mph must be 1500revs or so, in which case he coulda been in the right gear or dropped it down a gear. The highest power curve is about 5-5250 revs I think, and on mine when I hit 4.5k the car leaps forwards.. Also bear in mind how hard you depress the throttle will affect the power(sure does in my car)
You should have roasted him - his car with all that 4wd drive crap would weight at least 1300kg with 204 bhp, your 1060kg car and a real world 275+ bhp should have killed him if your were really running it to the power peak in all gear (5600 appaently in a 500).
It could have been Turbo'd.
I had a real hard job keeping a twat behind in a A3 Turbo - but this thing was turboed to death - had 2ft flame coming out of it on the after run - you can get 250 in Palmer Audi spec out of theses and 300 + if you are nuts.
Maybe some twin turbos on the 500!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year me and a couple of Swedish TVR owners went to a track day. The organizers had put together a "Fastest Sports Car" event. We thought we had it in the bag. Two Griffith 500´s and a Cerbera 4.5 plus some 350i´s. OK, when we got there we realized it was not so professional. It was all about starting from a stand still, going through the last bend before the start and finish straight and then finishing at the flag. A trip of 20 seconds or so. Who won? The Subaru Imprezas! Leaving all of the TVR´s, Cobras, DeTomasos and Caterhams in the dust. Just by a fraction but still...

xain. Had a v6 golf ( could it be the same one ? )on my bumper only 2 days ago. We came up to a slower moving car ( 40 mph , me in 3rd gear ) and I saw my excuse to let rip during the overtake. I must say he was very, very very, left behind, 5200rpm in 3rd and 4th ( quiet open country road, honest ) and the deed was done Unless it was a v6 sticker that is !
Isn't the pleasure in owning a Chim - or any TVR - not just the knowing you that you could blow away the GTI if you nailed it, but the fact that your doing it in a car that looks and sounds the absolute dogs, and, with no fancy driver aids - like 4WD - needs an element of skill and capability to keep the thing on the tarmac? The Chim is a ballsy muscle car with attitude. A Golf GTI 4WD is a girlie shopping car with a bit of poke and a lot of forgiveness. Revel in your superiority!
Absolutely, and normally I don't lower myself to racing, because I know I'll win, and something bad might happen if I'm stupid.
I just went to overtake him and was surprised that it wasn't easier.
I very rarely push my car above 4500 rpm because it pinks a bit, and I don't like the sound anyway. I *love* that relentless push in 3rd/4th from low revs and the growl rather than the high rpm howl. You don't get *that* in a shopping trolley, that's for sure!

Subaruz in a sports car event... Beats me, but they were allowed in That event was all about getting traction in the start and not going to sideways in the bend. Obviously they had the advantage with the fourwheel drive
Interesting, the term sports car. I consider my old TVR 2500 a true sports car, and the mentioned Golv V6 a piece of brick. But when it comes to performance I will be behind it. Evolution is turning some things upside down unfortunately, but still looks and class never fade And if evolution and looks needs to get mixed I bring out the Griff

If your car is pinking then it obviously isn't in peak tune is it?
One thing that helps you pull away from other cars is the long gearing. 3rd goes from 15mph to 100mph. To do that in my girlfriends TT (on boost) I'd need about 3 gears.
If you're changing up at 4,500 rpm then you're not getting this benefit either.

Four wheel drives were excluded from the standard A3 class (Over 2000cc) because they were whipping everyone, especially in the wet. They are now lumped into the B6 class (the class where Pete H and myself compete) and it is a big battle. The TVRs are faster in a straight line but loose out on the start and bends. Having said that, I am now beating them and even beat them in the wet a couple of times last year but it has taken so serious tweaking to do it. The problem is the scoopies can also tweak and so they are constantly pushing as well. Makes the competition very very tough and fun!

Marlboro, in light of this discussion I am interested in what you say about the FTO. I used to have one of these (GPX MIVEC) and whilst it did look OK, go kind of OK and handle alright it was so so dull. I have never owned a car which on paper should have been a blast and in reality was so boring. God knows how much cash I spent on mods for it but in the end I just got fed up and sold it... Bought a little Alfa and now have so much more fun, this will be going soon though.
I agree with other comments whilst cars are getting faster and makers are classing more cars as 'sports' cars there is still a indefinable quality that some cars simply have and others don't. Speed whilst great is not all!

They are there because that's what they are... Didn't you read the article, the scoobys won. I suppose winning the world rally championship is entirely irrelevant also, or is that not considered motorsport either?
I seem to remember another thread very similar to this a few weeks ago, after a Chim got pasted by a scooby at the lights.

Errrmmm, winning the WRC doesn't make a car a sports car. Sure, the old Fiat Abarth Spiders won rally events, and were undisputably sports cars, but the current Imprezza, Lancer EVO et al are *not* sportscars. They're bloody fast saloon cars or coupes, but not sportscars.
Sports cars by generally accepted definition have two seats and a soft top
