Don't think you're going mad, i always do this way i.e. reverse for pointing down hill and 1st for up hill. Having had a few 'moments' with disc's all round cars !! If you go the other way then all you are relying on is engine compression rather than compression and gearing - all it takes is dodgy compression rings and......... oh bugger !!
Not sure about the turning the wheels to the kerb though, I park mine on a bery busy road - where wing mirrors are reg removed by passing cars If yo uleave the wheels turned too far they'll stick out from the body work and you risk having them clobbered by some passing muppet !!

The garage's first quick look (not had time to do proper inspection/estimate yet) indicates that the NSF damage does go through to the engine bay. Not sure if the paint is metallic or pearlescent, but the handbook states it's "Sapphire Blue".

Parking in gear has its atractions. But full lock on is recommended. If toe rags try to get it. It will make their job harder, also should anyone try to tow it away by lifting the rear, it will crab along. Making it less prone to be taken. Should you overstay the parking meter. By accident naturaly

Visited family this morning, parked the chimaera up on the pavement pointing down hill.
10 minutes later a guy comes to the door telling me my car is at the bottom of the hill upside down.
It rolled down the hill, handbrake on, into the hedge by the side of the road, up the bank and over.
The windscreen collapsed completely, passenger side scraped along its length, front end smashed.
Nobody hurt luckily.
This is the part that really hurst though, I had the car serviced and collected it last friday having pointed out the handbrake needed looking at, which they duly did.
This was at an approved service centre as well.
To say i'm absolutely fing gutted is the understatement of the millenium. Be interested to hear what the insurance company have to say.

What shocking events! I am loath to leave my car in gear when parked, except when on an incline. I try to get the hand brake into the 4th rachet(sp?) to be sure it's locked, but then leave it in 1st for extra security. Maybe carrying house bricks to stop the wheels is an option?

Having cleaned mine on Sunday, was sat in it fiddling with something, one leg in, one leg out so to speak and pushed off on my right foot as a handbrake tester and b*gger me, the bloody thing went back as easy as anything – handbrake on as well as it could be. The car was cold not having been driven so don't think the contracting discs theory works here ...
Luckily living up here there are no hills but always gonna leave it in gear when elsewhere. Either that or carry me own Denver boot

I hardly ever use the handbrake on the flat, and living in East Anglia, leaving the car in gear is perfectly good. As a result, I'm getting slightly lazy about checking that it's off before I drive away.
If I'm on a slight slope I use the handbrake as well. I'm not sure why though: I've driven away many times thinking, "coo, it's a bit sluggish", then realised that the handbrake was on, but not doing a great deal.

Guys, cheer yourselves up by looking at these messes that people have made of their cars. Some of them are significantly more expensive.....

Think that it's a case of just be glad that you haven't trashed your car this bad rather than 'great a smashed F40' type of comment. Could be wrong but thats how i read it.

Seriously though, imagine how gutted you'd be if you'd spent £650,000 on a McLaren F1 and then stuffed it. I would also imagine that some of the cars took the owners with them, and by comparison, that's WAAYYY worse than a few grands worth of repairs.
