Hi chaps I’m after some advice

We have identified our 1976 mgb roadster has a head gasket leak.

I’m an average DIYer and am confident servicing , changing suspension etc but have never done anything like this.

Does anyone have any tips ? Iv got the head gasket kit , got a Hayes Manuel but would appreciate any words of wisdom before I dive in.
Thanks

Baskey

Where is it leaking between the head and the block on the spark plug side? It's a fairly common issue. Changing the gasket isn't a hard job you will be fine doing it from the manual.

Get a straight edge and check that the block and head face are flat and not warped.

Might be worth getting the head lightly skimmed anyway just to be sure.

Also check that the waterway holes have not corroded up especially at the rear of the block

Torque up head bolts/nuts in the correct sequence and to the correct torque.

Take your time and take photo's if you are unsure where parts fit before you remove them.

It's not a particularly hard job, easily done over a weekend or one long day. You'll need a torque wrench, but otherwise it's all standard size screwdrivers, sockets and spanners for tools.

As already said, worth skimming the head if it's overheated. It doesn't cost much and it'll give you some piece of mind.

Also worth checking the block hasn't been "pouted" around the stud holes due to over tightening. I refaced mine using a surface block and Emery paper. The head isn't a lightweight casting and it can take a bit if seperating
