I bought an MG ZR for the 1.6 K-Series engine it came with for a project I've got going on. I don't have a history of the vehicle, and the guy I bought it from said a previous owner tinkered a lot with the car. It should have a 1.4 engine in it but it has (apparently) a 1.6. It goes like stink so I'm happy enough with it.

Anyway, I wrote about it for my website, and I spent about half an hour yesterday taking arty photos of it for it. I hadn't ran it for a while so I turned it on and left it running while I took the photos. As I was taking photos of the engine bay I noticed that on the intake cam there is a little bit that sticks out. I thought it was unusual, and I looked through the Haynes manual and I can't see any other reference to it. The output cam has a plate over it. Here's a photo of what I mean:

The bit I'm referring to on that image is by the mushroom filter. It rotates when the engine is switched on.

If someone could identify it for me I'd appreciate it.

That is a rotor arm drive for an early engine.

Obviously when the engine was replaced they fitted an earlier type engine (pre 1999) but fitted the later electrics.

Dont worry it'll do no harm as the hardware of the engines are compatible with both earlier and later ignition/ECU systems

Ah OK. That's a shame I thought I managed to bag something fancy lol. No worries as long as it works it's fine with me smile
