Hello all,

I recently bought a road registered SR3 1500cc 2004 and will take it to the Ring to do TF sessions and Trackdays.

Are there any setup specific considerations? For example should I switch to 2.77 ( 37/41) longer gearing to account for the long straights?

Should ride height be increased a bit compared to "normal" tracks given track imperfections, Carrousells, etc?

My dampers are non adjustable so dont worry about that frown

Any other imput is much appreciated.

Hi, yes, indeed we met. What an awesome trackday it was! Pitty my car didnt make it to the end 😔

My friend said your car didn't have a dry sump fitted, so the engine might possibly have suffered under the G's and ran dry on oil?

What a great trackday exactly, especially as the rain came during the evening TF session we realized how lucky we got.
After the track closure was able to pull of a 6.45 without traffic so I'm a happy chap.

Yeap. Tim sent me the video. Absolutely Mega!!!

I had a wet sump, but theoretically as I had semislicks I would have been ok. But apparently it was not the case ☹️

Will be in Spa on Sep 4th. Hope to see you there

Hi Waky,

Super Lap in the SR8. I'm bringing my Sr8 to the ring during August. It's going to be my first time there, any tips would be appreciated in terms of tyre Pressures, damper setup etc. it is a trackday so will be running slicks "weather allowing", have you tried the new Hankook tyre?

Hi Mich,

very nice, you will enjoy it. The first thing you'll notice is the extreme bumpyness, even on the Dottinger höhe straight, car jumps all the way shaking your brains out. Nothing compare to my lotus exige. We adjusted the dampers with 3 clicks only, softer, it got better, but the car might use even a little more I think.

I did my warmup laps with some old Dunlops and changed in the afternoon to a fresh set of Hankooks, medium compound. As hankook advised to extend the tyre life, I first did a calm lap scrubbing in the tyres, let them cool down at the pump (drives me mad the speed of fueling) and then went for some fast laps. Of course they rocked, but can't compare with fresh Dunlops..

I might be there again with SkylimitEvents end of July smile

Tyre pressures as advised by Radical, 28-30psi. Start them cold at 22 psi.

Hi Waky,

Many thanks for that info, do you find the medium tyre goes off by the end of the lap, and also take Long to come up to temp from cold. Cheers

They give good grip surprisingly quick, not sure on the wear yet. But on a Radical everything wears quite slow in compare with the bigger GT cars, love it. Anyway haven't got much experience to compare yet..

My1300 is wet sump and I’ve never had any problems with failures. It’s road legal and runs on Tokyo 888s so similar grip levels.

I would be interested to know if it was oil pressure loss that caused the failure and if you have a standard motorbike sump or one with baffles?

Hi coldsawell,

Mine was also running in fairly new Toyo 888Rs. I dont have the final verdict as the engine will only be stripped next week, but looking at the onboard footage I saw the oil pressure dropping to zero in some turns. Particularly in the banked ones such as Aremberg. Also low oil pressure warning light came on a couple of times, but as it is red and situated beside the red low fuel light I coudn´t notice it frown

The problem was in cylinder 1 (Driver´s side), which is in line with oil stavation as the Nordschleiffe is a clockwise track.

Will report with more info next week

Just to complement the above, here you have the specialist´s comments:

"So we now have your engine stripped and I can confirm that the failure of your engine was caused by a lack of oil to the big ends. The other bearings also don’t look particularly great, so this indicates that the engine has been run low on oil/you have suffered from oil surge due to a lack of oil."

I am looking at a very expensive bill now, as crankcases, crank and cylinder block have to be replaced, besides all the other obvios parts

Would looking round for used engines be a better bet? That in itself is risky, but you are definitely going to have a big bill with that rebuild. There won't be many about, but you never know.

I am considering used engines as well. The worse part of the rebuild is buying new cylinder block and crankcases. If I could sourse these used cheaply the rebuild would start to make sense..

Ideas are of course welcome smile

Ouch! Sorry to hear that. I get some fluctuations in oil pressure but no side effects or failures yet.

I have always thought it would be cheaper to replace my standard 1300 than to dry sump it. You can buy some “sophisticated” wet sump systems but I have no idea what mine has.

You need long gears and dont go down in carousell .stay on top or car will get damaged underneath.
