My S3 has a five speed manual fitted which makes a massive difference.

Good luck with the conversion and take more pictures !
Aaaah! Then that makes sense, using a nice leggy fifth gear to use the torque. Are you using the Rover derived box or a Getrag item?
I'm wondering if you could use the ZF 4HP22 (non swithcable) from the old 7 Series?

One of my two XJ-S's was a V12 manual using the old four speed Massey Fergusson box* and that was a real weapon. 100 mph off any motorway slip road............then into fourth. :-)

To be honest I'm not sure. The previous owner fitted the box and I never thought to ask and I haven't even looked. I have a feeling it's the Rover derived box, but I'll find out.

In an ideal world I'd rather it was a four or five speed automatic but I remember looking into these a few years ago and the cost was prohibitive.

I used to have a V12E with a fuel injected Rob Beere engine (400+ hp) - that was quite impressive and had an American gearbox fitted - excellent bit of kit.

The GM400 auto was the weak link on the V12 - the ratios were never really right and they had a propensity to stop working around 50-60'000. Mine failed at 65'000, was rebuilt, failed again for the next owner and was replaced by a new one from Jaguar - which at £950 (in 1990!) was only twice as much as a crap rebuild.

The five speed used on the XK was the Rover derived box. The Getrag was used on the 3.6 XJS.

All 3.2 and 3.6 litre AJ6 engined Jaguars with automatic transmission used the ZF4HP22 gearbox.
