XJR (X300 flavour)
Discussion
You will find there are lots of rough XJR6s out there - I looked at loads!
My quest began 2 years ago and I looked at about 12, all rubbish. Then I happened across a 2 owner FJSH Sovereign lwb which was absolutely mint, which I bought instead and which I adore. I can't wait to drive it this weekend.
Then, for no reason other than it was for sale, I bought a 3.2 Sport manual with a sports exhaust. That was just superb! I recommend seeking out a manual car. Sold to a friend.
Then last Christmas I bought an XJR6. A great car, but I preferred the Sovereign as it was more "Jaguar-like".
Then in April I bought an XJR8 which I adore too - I find the ride better than the XJR6 due to the CATS dampers. Again, 2 owners and FJSH.
So, the morals of the story:
1. 95% of XJR6s for sale are rough.
2. Try out a manual 4.0 X300 - possibly the ultimate spec for me.
3. XJs are addictive!

Nice fleet!
This will be my third cat! I had a rough 2.9 manual XJ40 at about 22 which I didn't keep long and then a few years later a STUNNING 4.0 Celebration XJS, the only car I regret selling
For me the X300 has to be either Sport trim or and XJR, call me vain but I like the black exterior trimming, dark wood and the sports seats. I'm 27 and not quite ready for the wood and chrome of a Sov'!
And since I found a favourable insurance quote the idea of a supercharger is really appealing! I'd still be very tempted by a 4.0 Sport though but no nice ones about

Just a quick question, as I don't want to create a whole topic for it, but I've seen a manual XJR for sale. This is the ultimate spec for me, and considering I'm 21, is somehow insurable for not too much. The catch is, it has 220k miles. Is buying an XJR with this many miles a terrible, terrible idea? It's just that you don't often hear of the standard ones going past 200k very often, let alone the supercharged one!

I think i've seen the same car, highest mileage X300 i've ever spotted! Out of interest who is your best insurance quote from? I'm young ish too (27) and would just be interested to know I was given a sneaky peek at a friend's green X300 XJR the other day. Last manual they ever made. 9,000 miles on the clock. Spent it's life in the Jaguar VIP fleet, then a museum. Just incredible.
Myself, I make do with a mere 3.2 Sovereign LWB on sport suspension. A few more miles on the clock at 165k but they wear it well. Chrome and walnut all the way

My best quotes for most cars seem to be from Admiral, although I've also had some rather strange ones from them too. An example which sticks in my mind was a CLK 430 which, with Admiral, was more expensive to insure than a CLK 55 AMG of the same vintage, and double the amount of another similar CLK 430. Very confusing. Jags in general seem very reasonable to insure though, given the power and status of the cars. I guess they're not the sort of car a 21 year old normally buys, and not the sort of car you usually see being hooned around Halfords car parks and slotted into ditches. And would that be the green one for 3 grand? Rather overpriced, but a 4.0 Supercharged XJ mated to a manual box is quite a tempting prospect and also a very rare find, and at that mileage, it may have had a lot of parts replaced already, and to last that long, was probably taken care of.
Getting increasingly tempted by a manual XJR (if I can find a decent one, there seems to be 2 for sale at the moment. One with just 1 picture which is about 40 miles from me, and the aforementioned 220k miler) but I'm quite concerned about the reliability and running costs. The petrol is fine, and expected, but how ruinous are the general running costs? Servicing, standard parts, a clutch replacement etc. Also, are there any particular weak points, and as it'd be a manual, how hard would sourcing a replacement gearbox cost, for example?

At 220k anything could go wrong with any car. At 15+ years old the same applies. Thrash the bks off any car and you'll quickly wear it out - but an X300 is more robust then most old cars and providing it's not corroded then a good example bought at a sensible price is worth spending some money on if it's a keeper.X300 reliability is pretty good, engines and gearboxes are tough and will go on forever, brake and suspension components will wear and you may have the odd electrical fault. They are simple enough cars to work on so either DIY or get any general garage that you trust to do the work for you - no need to fork out at specalist or main dealer rates.
Service is every 10k with little needed to be done. Personally I don't think that's the way to go with any older car, I'd change all the oils and fluids more often than the schedule says and be alert on every journey for the first sign on any problems rather than doing what most people seem to do nowadays which is have the cheapest service and MOT done they can find and completely neglect the car for the rest of the year.
Parts are easily and cheaply sourced from aftermarket suppliers like British Car Parts, Eurojag breakers have tons of secondhand spares, and there's always one or two in the local scrapyard if you need any non listed parts.
As far as a clutch change costs I'd guestimate remove and refit the gearbox should take no more that 5 hours. Manual X300's are rare so you might encounter problems with parts supply of manual specific components like the gearbox - which could always be rebuilt rather than replaced - pedal boxes, slave and master cylinders and so on. It's pretty likley though Jaguar raided somebody elses parts bin for these so they shouldn't be impossible to track down.
None of the X300 parts are very expensive, and the X300 XJR doesn't have too many XJR only parts.
From mine I recall it had different injectors, ECU, throttle body, auto gearbox and the supercharger and cooler. Things like brakes are the same, and quite cheap.
If the gearbox is the same as the one used on the X300 3.2 manual which I had, I don't recall the clutch etc being particularly expensive.
Probably the most expensive thing for the XJR are the tyres, which are an unusual size.

As predicted a few years ago the Jaguar XJR straight six X300 has become an increasingly rare sight .
I've been looking for a decent example for some time now ! Prices have risen considerably since I last looked .
I viewed an XJR 6 in London ( described as beautiful condition throughout )
It had 270000 miles on the clock !
Viewing another car today with a reasonable 120000 miles on the clock with full service history ( fingers crossed 🤔)
How many trouble free miles can you expect from an XJR 6 engine ??
