I loved that smile

"That driver is letting me go, so I'm going to acknowledge his courtesy and press on. It's no good playing 'After You, Claude' at times like this"

hehe

I might be wrong but I think that Jag was one of the few cars on the road with disc brakes - driving in rain meant thinking of the person behind in case he could not stop in time...and not a speed camera in sight...

Correct

Also, no By-passes, driving through the centre of towns with no congestion

The thing is, so much of what he's saying also applies today, but people just aren't taught to drive like that. I wonder what learners today would make of it ?

And I did chuckle at the wobbly speedo needle - I had an old MGB GT with Smiths dials and the speedo on that used to wobble around - brought back all sorts of memories !

Actually it was in the dry you had to worry because in the wet his (and your) tyres were liable to break grip even with drums, but on a dry road discs would out-brake drums every time. The first time anyone drove a disc braked car with a servo was a revelation. Then going back to unassisted drums, terrifying!

In the west London area at that time, Renault Dauphines were used a lot as mini-cabs. They were all darkish red and seemed to have a dent in the rear horizontally across the numberplate.

I managed three...a VW bug near the end, but the broader point is very relevant. A whole industry has virtually disappeared. Very evocative of the time.
