I've decided to buy a Jagwarrrr. The TVR is staying, so it doesn't have to be mega quick - but lively would be nice. It will be for a short daily commute.

But I'm in two or three minds:

An S-Type Sport 3.0V6
An S-Type 4.0V8
An X-Type Sport 3.0V6
An X-Type Sport 2.5V6

The X-Type is 4WD, the S-Type RWD.

Any opinions? Who's driven or been in some, or knows of other's experiences?

I prefer the look of the x-type. Saying that the S-TypeR is stunning.

Go for the x-type with the sports pack.

The porsche 356 was a VW Beetle in a rather tasty bodyshell, look what that became...

btw- Alex, 4.0 S type (or XK8/R)

It needs to be four door, so that rules out the XK8.
The XJR is very nice - but I don't really want the running costs (especially insurance). I think I'm probably going to rule out the V8 S-Type, as again, I don't really think I'd feel the benefit on a five mile commute, and besides, anything feels slow compared to the TVR anyhow...

I want it to be relaxing and comfortable, with just enough kick to make it a little interesting. So I'm almost certainly going to have an Auto sport box version.

No you don't dare.

I know they are good, but it will be a few years yet before I go the oil burner route.

(Maybe I will try one out just to be sure my prejudice is unreasonable...)

Was going to say that. I'm in a similar quandry. If they only put the twin turbo diesel from the S Type into an X Type estate Id be laughing

Slightly o/t...Got a TDV6 Disco 3 coming next week. Drove the dealer's demo this week (Jag diesel single turbo) and, certainly compared to the outgoing diesel Discovery I have, the engine was a revelation...well compared to the old one, at least.

I had an XJ8 Sport, blooming lovely it was...

Only downside - abysmal boot.

Who cares if the X-Type is a Ford Mondeo, the S-Type is hideous!

The XJ, now that's a looker.

I had an in-depth chat with a technician at a Jag dealer recently. The X-Type is the entry-level Jag - yep, based on a Mondeo chassis, but then it starts at £19,995 so you're not going to get anything like an XK-R. Very much the alternative fleet motor IMHO.

By contrast the S-Type is based on a Lincoln Town Car chassis and, according to the technician, is pretty much a new design from the ground up rather than a make-do and mend car. At about £32K+ it definitely fits halfway between the X-Type and the 'true' Jags, the XJs and XKs.

I've had the S-Type 3.0SE for about a month and whilst it's not in the limo category (certainly not on 18" alloys!) I would say it's more like a 5-Series.

I might also add that the S-Type won the Autocar test between the BMW 530i and Merc E320: 'Excellent Jaguar steering, handling and superior body control make it the winner'.

The engine is surprisingly powerful at 240bhp (same as a Griffith 4.0!) but don't expect great economy: 25mpg here. It's also surprisingly long!

The S-Type was given a major facelift in 2002, the most obvious thing being an XJ-style centre console, but IMO this makes the interior look a bit smaller.

I've had BMWs (5 and 7) and a Merc, but a Jaguar still has a certain flavour, despite being owned by Ford, that I like. It's just a bit different.

Some excellent thoughts here guys, and thanks for the deatil Simpo.

I am always puzzled as to why people seem to think that the fact the X-Type uses a Mondeo chassis is somehow "dirty"...lol.

The Mondeo has a very fine chassis as far as I am aware.

I think the choice will come down to between an S-Type 3.0 Sport, and an X-Type 3.0 Sport.

(I wonder how much difference there is between the 2.5 and 3.0 X-Type?)

As I'm sure you know, 'Sport' doesn't make it go any faster; it's just an appearance thing. If you want toys, go for the SE. The 4.0 is not massively faster than the 3.0: but then for hooning I get the TVR out

Mine's a 2001 'X' reg in Pacific blue with ivory leather, satnav, voice activation, auto lights, auto wipers and gorgeous 18" BBS Monaco split rim alloys that look so good it's actually worth sacrificing the ride!! Oh yep, and all for £8,370

I think it might be time to head for your nearest dealer and get a test drive.....
