Wondered how many people have gone from TVR to Jaguar. In particular i am looking at selling my TVR V8S and either replacing it with a Jag XK8 (Possibly XKR) or another TVR the Cerbera.

My V8S has been very reliable but the Cerbera forum seems full of tales of woe at the moment so that has caused my to think seriously about the Jag although I still haven't written the cerb idea off completely yet.

So what i really want to know is can i use the Jag as an everyday car and would it cost the earth in servicing costs....anything more than 3k a year would be out of the question. Performance i know the figures but does the Jag feel reasonably fast and is it any good in the corners? Anyone gone from a cerb to the Jag and if so what do you think?

Finally my budget is 20k should I buy from the dealer or should i go private and then buy a warranty. Additionally it seems that there are loads of little Jag specialist garages are these any good and can anyone recommend one ?

I had an XKR and servicing was a relevation about 180 quid for a yearly 15,000-km service they are dirt cheap to service .

opps forgot to say , it felt plenty fast enough to me , above 100mph the surge of acceleration is great
Cornering is a bit vauge but not at all bad , just remember its a big heavy old thing .

I have gone from a TVR Chimaera to an XKR Convertible via a Porsche Boxster 3.2 S and I have to say I am well pleased! TVR have an excellent club in this area with great members and interesting outings, but I'm hopefull that the JDC will have similar.

Hi Ian,

I have a Griffith and an XJR V8.
They are completely different cars. Both are very quick but deliver very different. The Griff is perfect for weekend fun and terroricing other drivers because of noise and appearence alone. The Jag is very different, very quiet and smooth but in sports mode you will get a real Mr. Hyde out from Dr. Jekyll.
The Jaguar never feels that quick like the TVR does, you only realise when the overtooken cars have disappeared before you have time to look in the mirrors.
I also have the feeling that I move the Jaguar much faster than the Griff, because of its smooth- and quietness, you even have not to care that much about road conditions and when you are having fun, no officer is already waiting 5 minutes for your arrivel in the next valley.
The Jag is about style, but the TVR awakes your killer instincts, it is just agressive.
I couldn´t imagine life without the Tivi.
If I would have to choose I would keep the Griff.
For the costs I am sure, if things are going wrong, the TVR would be cheaper to keep by far.

Again, me no help at all.

The best decription I have heard for an XKR is 'iron fist in a velvet glove'. Best I could come up with for TVR is a steel fist in a steel glove which has been dipped in Tabaso and rammed down your boxers. No finesse just aggression and smiles with a lingering tingle of excitement

All I would say is keep the DSC on or kickdown gets a wee bit emotional, especially in a reasonably heavy long car running 400 genuine bhp. I would buy one.......if it was not for the existance of the TVR Tamora

If you can afford it go for a 2003MY car (has the current 4.2 s/c engine, up 30bhp over previous engine plus a few other enhancements.)

Hi Rustoni,

It seems that we are an ever increasing breed as I have gone from a TVR S to an XJ8 along with a Mark II Jaguar.

Alexkp is another who has just joined 'the other side'.

It's great to see some familiar names again from the old 'S' Club!

After a week of XKR ownership, this car is the bollox. £20k will get you a nice XJR, but maybe a tad low for an XKR. £25k would sort that out. The XKR is a heavy car but the thoughts already posted sum this stealth speed tool up! this is blisteringly quick. Goes form 60-90+ in A HEART BEAT.

The body roll issue is resolved in the XKR because of the CATS suspension. The XK8 on the other hand doesn't have it as it is an expensive option. I find the XKR has less body roll than me S2000 had!

Hi Triple7,

I know you got your XKR with some manufacturers warranty still left, but did you get it from a main Jaguar dealer, or buy an extended warranty separately?

I bought it from a Jag Dealer(Weybridge), but the car came from Jaguar stock up in Coventry. So I got the remainder of the factory warranty, plus another 12mnths.

Cheers Triple 7 they have some nice examples on their website. I can up the budget to £25k as long as it isn't going to cost me the earth in servicing as maybe the cerbera would. For some strange reason i prefer the coupe to the cab although i don't like the orginal wheels some of the early cars come with so would have to budget about £1k for replacements.

Nice Car Triple 7 but an XKR100 is well out of my budget.

The age of car you're looking at 2000ish then go to an independant. Main Dealer service prices are £400 for a minor and £700 for a major, so expect less than that at an Indy.

Get the big wheels, but get the Brembo brakes too, as the tiny discs will look awful on such huge rubber.

Go for an XKR too, its how the XK is meant to be!

Just had my 2001 XKR in for its 4 year (40000 ml)service, and it cost 250 quid, a third to a quarter of the price of servicing my Cerbera, oh, and 4000 miles extra, too. I find the performance almost as good as the TVR, and in fact, with the CATS suspension, it runs rings around TVRs over bumpy road surfaces. It doesn't leak, the A/C works like a charm and it still looks drop dead gorgeous!!

Go buy that Black XKR Conv at Arun Jag!

Seriously, it shouldn't matter where you buy the car from, as long as the car is in excellent shape, with all the servicing carried out, that it hasn't been bent or damaged and is simply to good not to buy. And you feel happy with the person you are buying the car from. Private would be a great way of getting a good car cheaply, but get an HPI and call the Dealership who has done the servicng, to check the car out for its history.

An independant might not offer a Jag warranty, but you can always buy a Jag one anyway.

Let us know how you get on.

In short you want the newest car in the best shape that you can afford.

I am an ex Chim and ex Cerbera owner. Fancy another sports car. the wife wants me to buy a cerb for 20K ish. A 911 996 R reg at 27K ish seems attractive. But an XKR seems very interesting.
I am 38 yrs old, a jag before I am 50 !? ie is it an old mans car?!

Hi Gary.....I had similar thoughts re Jag before 50 and I'm a year younger than you ! My mates were taking the pi$$ out of me and bought me a pair of slippers ( actually, lovely!!!-aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!)and pipe for xmas. However, they soon changed their tune when I took them out for a spin and 400 bhp of supercharged V8 with that lovely 'charger "whine" was let loose.....yet you can also just "waft" along in superb comfort with no draughts, leaks from the roof in a/c'd comfort and not attract the wrong kind of attention. Be in no doubt, this is a seriously quick car- I had a Marcos Mantis before, so similar to the Tiv, and my XKR is quicker in the real world.....put aside your prejudices and go for a test drive, you'll be very surprised! Deja Vu i am in the same situation as you although i am a little bit younger - 31. The missus really wants a Cerbera even though we test drove one last weekend at a main dealer and it was less than perfect, in fact it was awful.

So how do i convince the missus the XKR is the way forward.
