I am an ex Chim and ex Cerbera owner. Fancy another sports car. the wife wants me to buy a cerb for 20K ish. A 911 996 R reg at 27K ish seems attractive. But an XKR seems very interesting.
I am 38 yrs old, a jag before I am 50 !? ie is it an old mans car?!

Deja Vu i am in the same situation as you although i am a little bit younger - 31. The missus really wants a Cerbera even though we test drove one last weekend at a main dealer and it was less than perfect, in fact it was awful.

So how do i convince the missus the XKR is the way forward.

If you're in 2 minds about a Jaguar or a TVR, check out "Informal Guildford/Surrey Type "R" Beer Meet".
Good chance to discuss pros and cons - Ellstead Mill at Elstead on Friday 14 Jan from 17:30.

I would explain to her that the Cerbera running costs could easily be five times as much or more - and the difference will be a very nice holiday in a five star hotel with all the trimmings - or whatever floats her boat.

I agree gazza. I'm not a fan of the walnut dash and streering wheel and cream leather so much. It is way to 'mature' for me.

Go look at a Type 'R' XKR i.e. a 2001/2 or later, get the leather wrapped steering wheel. Sports interior has black dash, Recaro seats and some aluminium and it goes away form the tradit and into a more sporty arena.

Then join the Type 'R' Club.

Look at the forum 'My XKR' on htis page or the next, following my link to some pics which shows the type of thing I mean.

Good luck, I agree red isn't the way to go!

After driving an XK8 I thought it was one of the worst handling cars I had ever driven, it is like an old barge. I have never been so disappointed by a car, I was expecting lots and it was a big letdown. They must have done a lot with the R's handling for it to get such a good following.

What year was the car and do you know if it had the optional cats package ?

Just been to look at V reg XKR at a local garage it was up for £25k. Nice car inside, plenty of room i thought even for a wide boy like myself. Only problem was the car hadn't been serviced since Sept 03 so i walked away.

Now thinking that for the money i have i should get the XK8 Cab with Cats and wait until i find one in the spec and colour i want. Black with Detroit wheels.

Has anyone else got frustrated looking at Jaguars used car listing...none of the cars shown are the actual cars they are all libary pics!

hold out for an 'R' there is a huge difference in performance! I don't believe the servicing is a huge deal more (I stand to be corrected). The only real increased cost should be the insurance and fuel - but still well worth it IMHO. If you get the kick-down right at low speeds, the acceleration is BRUTAL!!!

I drove the car a few years ago, would have probably been a 2000 car, I really wanted to like it but was so disappointed I ended up turning up the stereo and listening to some music. The salesman even commented that a BMW was a good alternative!
