Thinking about an old 2006 or so S Type 2.7d as an every day car.
47 year old in Nov, single, need a car for work circa 15000 m per year.
Am I mental?

I had my first Jaguar (XJ40) when I was 31. It was an achievement to get up to 'Chairman' level and enjoy 'grace, space and pace' when everyone else had Fords.

Since then amongst other cars I've had two S-Types for six years each, the latter being a 2.7D in Jaguar Racing Green.
I loved it but didn't realise how nice it was to drive until it needed replacing and I bought an XF, which by comparison was bumpy, noisy, unrefined and poorly instrumented. My friends thought it was fine, but then, they have ordinary cars so don't know anything else! There is no practical difference now between 'Jaguar' and Ford now other than a leaper stuck awkwardly on the back.

If you can be big enough to ignore the cries from the motoring meeja about 'old-fashioned' get an S-Type.

Sounds like a perfect car for that sort mileage on a budget, why would it be mental? Get one and find something else to worry about.

I'm 45, married with two kids and brought a 2006 2.7D s-type a year ago. It's been expensive with a few niggles then the EGR valves, but I'm past that (about £2k past that now with the various repairs), but it's now been running well for a while and a joy to drive. So comfortable and quiet with a lovely smooth auto box and reasonable space all round although the boot isn't very tall.

As long as it doesn't cost much over the next year it still works out reasonably cheap motoring given how cheap they are to buy!

How about a 2.7d XJ instead?
