Having recently shortened my XF by about a foot I'm now the Captain of a splendid 2006 XK 4.2. Unfortunately the satnav DVD is the original, so well out of date. The good news is that before the XF departed I managed to salvage its satnav DVD, a 2014 disk. Aha, I thought, I'll put that in the XK and enjoy 2014 satnav loveliness.

Not quite. Loading the 2014 disk brings up a message on the display that says:
'New disc requires an auto Software update.
Current software: v0592
New software: v0BB0
Duration = 15 minutes.
Eject DVD immediately to stop the update.'

How on earth can a DVD update, even if the car was connected to the net? Afterwards, the 'Navigation' button didn't do anything, but after leaving it overnight and putting the old DVD back it was back to 2006.

Can I do anything to get a 2014 disk working in a 2006 car please?

If you left the car with the electrics (but not engine) on then it will have switched them off to save the battery. Pop the new disc in and start the engine and let it run for 20 minutes or so.

I changed the original 2007 disc in my MY08 XKR for a 2011/2012 disc shortly after I got the car, it chuntered away for a bit and eventually completed. I can't remember what screen output there was during and after the process but it does work. The disc doesn't just contain navigation data updates, it also contains the software update for the navigation module too.

Thanks 8bit, that gives me the confidence to give it a go. I was talking to an IT friend yesterday and he thought the same. I felt there was a chance that if it didn't 'install' properly - there being an 8 year gap between versions - it might break the thing completely.

Had this when I bought my XK - 2014 disk off eBay in and it says the same 15 minute update.

Put the disk in, drove three miles down the road, forgot about it. Got back in car a couple of hours later, head to the far side of town (30 mins) and nearly sh*t myself when the centre console turned itself off halfway there. Radio, display, everything just turned off. Came back on 30 seconds later, lo and behold I now have working nav. smile

Good news, but you do realise that 2014 is still "well out of date"...?

The latest official disc sold as compatible with the alloy-body XK/XKR is 2014/2015.

I assume the XJ 350 satnav is different to the XK of the same era as I can't find a more recent disc than 2012 available anywhere.

According to everything I've read so far the XF disc can't be used in the XJ 350.

Anyone know different as I'd like to update my 2008 XJR ?

You're correct there I'm afraid, at least in as much as that you have a different system from the X150 XK and earlier XF models. I can't say anything regarding what your options are but I'd suggest heading over to jaguarforum.com and having a look in the appropriate section for your car there, if you haven't already.

My 2012MY XKR Satnav won't keep the TMC tuned, says no available station. Thoughts?

TMC is carried on Classic FM. Might be worth checking you can tune in to that. Maybe try listening to that as you drive around and see if the messages coincide with drops in the radio reception?

I thought with DAB it would be fine. Always says no station abailable. It does tune once close tl M25, but a bit late by then!

I'm no radio expert but susepct DAB stations have much smaller range due to higher frequency. FM rules!

I'm also no expert but according to wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_message_channel), TMC is carried via "conventional FM radio broadcasts" which would suggest, to me, not DAB. If you read the section about the United Kingdom TMC Services in Operation it states there that the UK service is carried by Classic FM.

Drifting off topic (and my apologies.....) but, as satnavs were being discussed, I thought I'd ask if anyone had noticed their display showing a "historic" breadcrumb trail of the car's track, from a previous day ?

I know other gps devices are able to display this (breadcrumb) data - but it's a first for any of the Jaguars I've owned.

Puzzled and Confused

Yes, the one on my 2008 XKR does this too. I've no idea how far back it stores the history for, or if it's for all journeys or just those I've used the navigation for but certainly I find myself driving on or crossing over roads with the breadcrumb trails from time to time.

Slightly different from this. I was on my way back to UK going through Switzerland when my satnav started freezing in my 2009 XKR. When I went to Marshall’s in IPSWICH they said it was because the disc was a copy despite the fact I had been using it for a year. So purchased the approve 2014 set for £171 quid and still did not work. I don’t think they could be bothered to investigate. So I thought it was the DVD reader. Bit the bullet and ordered a used unit from Eurojags and removed the original and installed the used one which took three quarters of an hour.Put the dvd back in and the message came up on the dash for software update which took 15 minutes. System rebooted and hey ho all back up and running.
