No difference in how they handle, or performance. 8 speed box is a bit smoother through the gears, due to it having more to play with.

The biggest failing on the 'classic' was always the standard headlights, which were rubbish. So if you do go for one, make sure it has HIDs which were optional on all models.
good tip, i don't drive much at night tbh but when you do need them...

my e60 was manual which i never wanted so it'll be smoother than that smile my barge for the dog is a 4 speed 1999 saab aero, quite happy with the way that shifts, can't be worse, can it?

I always found the 6 speed box fine and plenty smooth on my old classic. Some complaints have been levelled against the 8 speed in the 2.2 engined cars, as it dances around between gears a lot, but the torque on the 3 litres is sufficient it doesn't need to.

8 speed on my current 3 litre petrol is sublime. No idea it's changing half the time, but it's the same box as used previously.

btw, if you can't get an S, it's easy enough to stick an engine management box on to bump the power up to S levels. There were no differences between the engines and gearboxes other than map.

i guess that means you can't chip the S if its at its max, i suppose you get other bits with the S not just the power?

theres a 4.2 sv8 on AT with all the goodies in a nice colour, were these problematic? its got 82k FSH

does perforated seats automatically mean they're cooled? of the cars that state they have heated seats, some are perforated and some aren't, I'm assuming people don't know they have cooling as well? or were all heated seats later on perforated

No, you can chip the S as well. Up to about 300bhp I think.

The SV8 has a good rep, performance is on par with the 3.0d S. If you'd prefer petrol, and can't go to an XFR, then it's the best bet. A tiny number of 3l supercharged petrols were sold of the X250 and frankly it wasn't a good engine at the point, nowhere near powerful enough. They didn't sort it out until the current X260.

Perforated leather isn't a sign of cooling, it's the better spec leather.

Funny u mention the s/c 3.0 as one has popped up this eve, 22k miles, I guess that means it wasnt working often biggrin or do you mean they were a bit agricultural in their running

No, the engine is perfectly smooth, and a lot quieter than the diesel. Just the tune in the X250 wasn't quite powerful enough. The mpg was about the same as the 5l XFR. And the 3l diesel's torque made it a better general drive. That said, even in the 340bhp trim, it's still faster than all the diesel variants.

With the X260 they upped the power and improved the fuel consumption.

I went for a later facelift Premium with the 8 speed auto as opposed to a higher spec but older gearbox. Very happy with it. It doesn't have super audio but then I only listen to Radio 4, and I don't miss any other options to be honest. Goes nicely.

Don't forget that there's also the 5.0 V8 non supercharged model available, probably the rarest of the XF models in the UK as they are the standard USA car only available to special order in the UK. I had one for about 3 years. According to the service book It was a Portfolio Plus (whatever that is!). and probably the best car I've ever had. Rcently PX'd at about 53,000 miles for under £12,000 so could be in your price range, if you can find one. The facelift version is particularly rare.

Mine was a Jaguar executive's car originally so as mentioned above came fully loaded with all the toys you are seeking.

385 BHP, petrol, fully spec'd, what's not to love? Fab car IMO.

Well first of all, thanks for everyones help, especialy you Benji..

After an intensive week back in the uk testing my shortlisted cars (e-class coupe, CLS, CL, F10, XF) I finaly took the plunge on an XF yesterday.

First to fall was the Merc e-class coupe, have you seen the interior? eek

Then the CL500, 100k originaly & only 8 years old, tried 3 just in case the first was a lemon but by god id have been dissapointed if id bought one of these originaly, interior leaves you cold, its not any quiter than XF even with 'double glazing' and the ride was mediocre at best, i realise it was an old model at 2009 but even so! I had to test 3 just to see i wasnt being mad on first one, cant beleive people paid this for them.

F10, to be fair at my price they were too low end spec and high mile rep mobiles

CLS was a closer call, very similar in spec and performance at the money but just looked soooo dated compared to the xf and at 2011 didnt have BT audio, just phone, i think if the later 5.5 v8 had been around in my colour combo it might have changed things because the 3 x 5.5s i had a go in went beautifull, manic or calm it did both really well but still id have had a car that 'looked' less cutting edge, some could call it timeless though, beauty and the beholder etc...

The XF i bought i tested half way through the week and it didnt help the case for going and viewing other cars tbh, drove all over uk in one of the companies i3s, weird looking for luxury car driving something with zero lux (a few weird looks from vendors hehe) but probably stiffened my desire for luxury, and thats where the XF wins really, none of the others could beat it on occasion, silence, comfort and gadgets, it even has a lovely growl from the V6! From a diesel? Its no maserati but certainly better than the 6 pot i had in the e60. Some of the touches like jaguar written onto vents that rotate, the light clusters and upholstery etc really have surprised me, well chuffed with my final decision so far, just about to get off the ferry for a 500 mile trip home and so looking forward to it, not just because driving in uk is pretty st but the relaxing drive i had from north london to portsmouth was sublime and i want some more.

Anyway, enough gushing, thanks again! May want a chip at some point, i see quantum chips operate in france, anyone used them? Didnt have time in uk to get it done
