Just had a call from the dealer. The car's built and due with them next week, I pick up early week after.

About 7 weeks from order.

Edited to say that I got another call end of the day, they'd have the car tomorrow, Friday 1st and I can collect next Wednesday, the 6th.

All I've got to do now is figure out how and where to get a set of winter tyres/wheels with tpms sensors that it will recognize.

Well, I picked the car up today. Very in-depth introduction to it, especially the ‘incontrol’ stuff.

In general the car seems fine. Drives very well, and I like the tech so far, though I do wonder how necessary or genuinely useful it really is. Sitting in the house I can check it’s mileage, fuel level and where it is. I could start it but won’t be doing that. Doubt I’ll be using these features much!

Problem trying to plan a route on my phone and send it to car. Account set up on phone and car but since I set up car I can’t access a/c on phone! Either says details are wrong or account temporarily locked for security reasons, try later. Again, not something I’d use much but still....

Minor issue with my phone. Paired up wife’s iPhone 5 and my 6. Her contacts have uploaded, music etc., but won’t upload mine! Even if her phone’s not in range it won’t upload my phone’s stuff.

But other than that I’m quite pleased with it. Early days but compared to my 530d, it has a slightly noisier engine when accelerating but it’s smoother (petrol now). Steers and handles much better than 5, which had adaptive drive, rides as well as, much more responsive to throttle. The XF has Configurable Dynamics but I haven’t played with that yet. The dash and central display are great fun; very adaptable and comprehensive. Touch screen works well.

As for the SatNav, yes, just like the BMW and our Merc it seems intent on dragging us across country instad of the easier faster routes!

Oh, you will. There’s nothing better on a frosty morning than sitting inside nice and warm finishing your morning coffee, while your locked and immobile car warms itself up, heats the seats, and clears the windows for you.

Apart from maybe sitting on the beach in the summer, while your black car cools itself down from being an oven before you drive home.

Ha ha. Fair enough, though I can’t imagine I’d waste the fuel rather than put a coat on; plus the car’s garaged 99% of the time and rarely gets too cold!

As for the other, beaches aren’t my thing, especially in this country and I’m happy to put up with a bit of discomfort for a few minutes. (Would it even be legal in the UK?)

Still, subject to trying the remote start this morning that app works. Can’t get the route planner app to work and not sure what rerun is all about.

What spec of nav did you go for? I've ordered the itouch pro with the 825w surround, I'm hoping it's worth the extra outlay.

It is but be prepared to do some reading and learning to get the best from ICTP. It’s a very sophisticated system and worth reading the manual and watching Jaguar’s YouTube videos.

I went for the middle option the ITPro but the 380w meridian as opposed to the full surround sound 825.

Sorted out my phone contacts, the phone wasn’t set to share them, that’s all.

The ICTP seems pretty good. It’s quite logical when you’re into it, and very comprehensive. The Virtual Instrument Display is good too, useful to be able to have a full map right in front of you and all the other options. My sales guy talked me out of the HUD and I’m glad he did. It seem redundant with the VID.

The Meridien 380 is definitely better than the HK in my 5 series. The 825 should be special.

I’ve had a good crawl over the car now. Body panel gaps are very even, it seems well put together. I think BMW are a bit tidier under the bonnet but the Jag’s OK.

There is a serious issue though. I bought a boot liner and a boot sill protector. The latter won’t fit in with the former in place........... wink I can live with that!

Didn't want to hear that. The reason I went for the 825w was coming from a 5 series with the 600w HK Surround I was worried the 380w would be lacking. May have wasted some dosh.

Interesting to see you're moving from 5 series to a XF also. Why the change for you? For me I had the new 5 series on test for 2 days and was bored in the first 24 hours. I giggled like a child in the XF I had for 48 hours a much much better drive.

If your into you music it may well be worth it. I didn’t think the extra would be for me.

My 5 series went in for service early October. I was already thinking of changing so when I booked it in, with 10 days notice, I asked them to get me a 530i and/or 540i SE to try whilst it was in.

Turned up on the day and the sales guy had done nothing. At first he said they had no 5s at all for me to try, then found a 520d, M Touring which he said I could have ‘for an hour’.

I took it out on a nearby ring road but found it oddly sterile, very quiet and competent but hardly interesting. Also too similar to my own 530d. Didn’t think there was much point driving it so took it back after 20 minutes. Got a quote for a 540i, collected my car, went home.

Two days later passing Jag dealer, dropped in on the off chance. Was taken out for a drive in a 25t R-S. First Jag I’ve been in for years. Very impressed. Went back two days later and was loaned same car for a while, got a good deal and ordered car. Yesterday was 7 weeks to the day that I called in on the off chance.

Haven’t driven it much yet but it does seem different to the BMW; more responsive, sharper, I don’t know, more involving I guess.

I would agree with some of what said about it being not quite as high spec inside as the BMW but it’s not far off and that’s outweighed by the dynamics IMO.

Build quality? Time will tell but it looks well put together and everything works well so far.

I was thinking of a 3 litre BM but judging by this engine the 4 pot turbos aren’t bad at all. This seems better than the 528i I tried 4 years ago, IIRC.

An update if anyone’s interested!

Nw done 300 odd miles, after trip to midlands this weekend.

Overall car is fine. Little more road noise from tyres on coarse surfaces than 5 series but not too bad. Ride comfort is good, tech is generally fine, no rattles or squeaks at all

The handling is definitely better than 5 though I’m finding it hard to pin down why. Glance at speedo shows often going faster than I thought, car feels so much more able on B roads. Where in the 5 I would trust the car blindly (and to be fair it never really failed me) the Jag just lets you know it is well within it’s limits. It feels like a much smaller, well planted car.

What was the spec of your 5 v's the XF?

I have the M Sport with Plus Pack (19" Wheels) and Standard M Sport suspension. I have ordered a R Sport with 20" Wheels, which was what I test drove. I found the XF felt brilliant with regards to feel and handling compared to the 5, how they get the standard set up to feel so good on 20" wheels is the work of magic, comfy yet firm but no crashing etc. but didn't really pay much attention to the road noise as I was too busy enjoying B roads. Is it that noticeable?

Worry not!! My 5 was a Luxury with full comfort pack and adaptive drive, with 18” wheels.

The aim was the most comfortable, quiet cruiser I could get. I doubt a 5 gets better in that regard than the spec I had.

I did test an M with 19 or 20” wheels when I bought the 5. The ride and road noise were way worse than my eventual choice.

Anyway, the XF road noise isn’t so bad. The whole thing is really growing on me. The 5 has the edge on quality plastics etc but the XF definitely has the better ride, overall.

Getting to grips with the tech now. The remote services and route planner all works well as does all the in car stuff

Having played more music, I’m not so sure its better than the HK, more different.

Brighter, better separation, good bass and detail but can sound edgy and over bright/thin on some tracks, especially if turned up. I found the HK a little dull for my taste. I’m listening to Springsteen, Knopfler, Jackson Browne eg.

My XF arrives a week tomorrow. Just under 12 weeks from order.

Will be on a 57 plate but with other cars being returned it has worked out well and will be no fuss trying to use the one car in the interim.

How is everyone else getting on with their XF's?

Mine’s grown on me. I much prefer it to the 5 series now. it’s done about 2500 miles and seems to already have loosened up. It doesn’t slow as quickly as it did lifting off at 70 or so and the fuel consumption seems better too. Over the past 900 miles it has averaged 39mpg. A few long (100 mile +) runs and just knocking about. I reckon the 530d would have been mid 40s on similar duty. The engine is amazingly smooth for a 4 and very quiet except under hard acceleration.

No point mentioning the ride and handling again, it’s in a different league to the F10. As I thought earlier, the ride is quieter on smooth roads but rougher surfaces give a bit more road noise than the F10.

I’ve found the seats firmer and less comfortable than the BMW, though it had the pricy comfort seats. I’ve read on a Jaguar forum that the seats will soften with use. We’ll see.

Nothing’s gone wrong, all the tech works except for voice recognition; it’s supposed to be able to change the radio stations but mine either gets it wrong, (Gaydio anyone?) or starts to dial, eg, 02– - - when I say RadiO 2! Apparently there’s a software update imminent which should enable VA SatNav, maybe it’ll better understand my radio needs then!

No rattles or squeaks, and I got a set of 17” Borbet wheels with winter tyres and OE Jag spec TPMS valves for £1k from Mr WInterWheels.

So, don’t miss the 5, very happy with the XF so far.

Not an XF, but a JLR product with InControl Touch Pro: http://amzn.eu/8P8fZoK

Data usage is meant to be in the order of 1-200MB a month, unless you're streaming music constantly etc, so this should easily cover it. The problem is finding a SIM that is longer than 3 months, rather than a capacity issue...

I bought a 12gb card that lasts 12 months from Argos, about £32

Usage is in 10s of Mb a week. 12gb is going to be way too big but I can’t find anything that isn’t 1gb per month. Eg 12/12 months, 6/6 months etc.

At £30 odd a year I’m not too bothered.

Mine arrived Friday morning at was bit dirty and I picked up a couple of small stone chips but the guy had driven it from London. Glad I went for black I not seen one in the flesh or sat in one I was slightly apprehensive but first impression were really good. Coming from a Skoda the interior is a much nicer place to be and has a high end feel. Overall given that it's a relatively big class if car it doesn't really offer any extra interior space over the Octavia which im glad I'll still have as the wife's car because the boot whilst long isn't as deep as I expected as the main battery and puncture stuff takes up quite a bit of space. still it's big enough for our family of 3. I'll see how pram suit cases etc can be configured when we next have a holiday or long trip planned.

The only negatives on first impression is the boot and the standard wheels aren't really to my taste but aren't as bad in the flesh as the configurator images showed.

I got the email promting me to downlaod the Jaguar remote app a couple of days before the car arrived so it was quite fun seeing where it was at and randomly starting it....... I can see me starting it up tomorrow before work so.its nice and toasty for the drive into work.

I've had a busy weekend so need to have a fiddle with the features still. It drives really well and find it to be very refined. Whilst the performance isn't blistering it goes well enough for a big car.

So far I'm really happy with my choice.

I know what you mean about space. Doesn’t feel as big as my previous 5 series, though apparently key dimensions are similar. Good leg room in rear I find.

Boot is a bit awkward to access too. We got two large suitcases in OK, and other things. Folding seats help.
