The light will come on after 3 journeys (ie 3 failures), it will then clear after 3 trips if fault has gone away which would explain why the light has gone off for you.

Then why would Jaguar specify the number of trips required to illuminate the MIL in the fault code description (usually No Driver Warning, or 2 trips on this ecu)

A red check engine light is for diesels only. A petrol engine check engine light will not turn red.

On an X200, the red MIL will show for (eg) throttle actuator module going down (P1585). Or at least thats what Jag say.

If the check engine light does come on, a fault code will be stored which any garage should be able to check with a scan tool.

Autologic (or wds) will pick up more than OBD codes from the car, and will not forget them.

the light is only to indicate that there is a problem. We dont like it when customers start self diagnosing stuff!

Our techinicians spend years training and we like them to use their brains occasionally!

it has been a long time since a technician (sic) (must be a new word for fitter) used a brain. If it requires a technician to plug in a device which reads codes to identify faults and then change the part identified by the fault code, then good heavens the Town Clarke will be called the Cheif Executive and the bin men Environmental Engineers!!

My 'S Type' handbook tells me that this light indicates a fault with the emision control system.

In my day, a service advisor would be a fully qualified timeserved mechanic with above avarage diagnostic ability..........how times change.
