I would like something a bit different to the Insignia I currently have. I did think I had a budget of about 16k but life means that's now about 11k. It needs to be petrol as I do lots of short trips and virtually no long ones. Am I buying a bag of trouble with such a big engined car? I've checked the mots and it's never failed and had no advisories. It drives like magic (but it would) and it seems it'll go for close to 11k. Is that about right from a main dealer at 56k miles? Do I need to just buy a Scoda?

I'd love an answer to this as I'm looking at an SV8 and I'm also thinking I need to not be an idiot and get a skoda.

Hoping we'll both be convinced to get it...

I assume you mean the F Type SV8.

I've never had one but I did have an F Type 5.0l V8 n/a with 385 BHP. Had it for 2 /12 years, great car really Jaguar like. Great performance when needed yet would waft around at ease all day. No major issues with it at all.

I regarded it as a keeper but the wife found it not so comfy after three hip ops so it had to go. Now have a Land Rover D5.

Hi No, I'm thinking of an XF SV8 2009. It's a 420bhp supercharged @ £11k and 55000 mile and I'd love it but not sure if its a crazy purchase.

So the engine is the same 420bhp 4.2 Supercharged V8 I have in my XKR with the same ZF 6-speed auto box. These are very reliable providing they're correctly cared for but they're not so exotic that proper care is costly. Hold out for one in good condition with correct service history and ideally evidence of proper care and maintenance.

I can't really comment on the rest of the car because I've never had an XF but I'm not aware of any common and expensive gotchas but certainly I'd happily recommend that combination of engine and gearbox. I bought my XKR before we had kids and have been thinking about swapping it for one of these for the practicality - I love the XKR and would hate to give up the lovely engine and transmission but some more seats and space would be handy sometimes.
