Really keen on getting a 3.0 diesel s and came across a car that is exactly the spec I would like, but it has 120k miles on it, ie. It has down about 30k per year.

Normally high mileage cars are not an issue for me, I have two others that are 120k & 150k, but don't know much about these cars and would like your thoughts on it.

It's only about £3-4k less than others i have seen advertised but it does tick all the boxes.

Apart from a complete service history and evidence of a cambelt change, will the suspension need refreshing and what else might there be?

Apologies for taking this slightly off track but I went to buy a 3.0 XF sportbrake in 2013 having coveted it since I saw the spy shots and I was very disappointed with the build quality and usability. I ended up with a CLS 350d Shooting Brake (actually two in a row); if 14ishk is your budget and you want 3.0l diesel then I suggest you may want to consider these, interior is top notch and the styling a bit more special (subjective I admit!).

Slightly fewer miles and a bit older at similar price...

Is there not a graveyard full of broken Jaguar XF 3.0L diesel engines?

I read a thread about blown up engines but also see that JD power survey has these cars quite high up in the reliability charts too.

My thoughts was also that a high miler would also have been a few times back to the dealer for servicing and niggle removal under warranty too.

The merc is also lovely but the one posted seems to be an outlier and a private sale, the next nearest 3 litre is at least a few grand more, the rest being the 2.1 litre which I would not go near to be honest. smile

The 4 pot Merc is not the most refined engine I agree, but it is bloomin reliable wink

The Jag is a lovely car and I have been tempted but put off by constant reported reliability issues, electrical as well as engine related.

Agreed, the 2.2 Merc engine, especially in 250 guise (only on the pre-facelift) with 200+bhp, is extremely reliable. In a CLS you will never hear or feel it. I wouldn't rule one out without having a go; a quick tuning box would get it up to circa 250bhp.

The Jag is a lovely car but there are enough problems in warranty, having covered so many miles I think it is a reasonably brave purchase.

Regarding that specific car - it's been up for sale, repeatedly, over the last 6 months or so. I think it was with other traders too, but can't remember. The 'R' badge on the back makes it quite noticeable each time it re-appears on my searches.

That, the mobile only number and the 'viewing by appt only' personally would make me very cautious.

ETA - and the dealer website goes to a 404 message.

That's interesting re it being up for so long. I tried the site too.

I really don't mind the mileage, the spec was spot on but that's the great thing about this forum when helpful info like that pops up.

What's the point though of advertising fake cars on autotrader, what is the benefit?

Don't know it's fake, per se - just that I wouldn't pay anything in advance and would get it very very thoroughly checked before buying it.

Does anyone know if a Jaguar dealer would inspect a car like this, for a fee or is there a better service available? I'd like it to go up on a lift and for it to be checked for accident damage too.

In the past I bought a few cars, unseen from franchised dealers and then had them shipped out, but since then I have bought older classics / and a tvr and have used specialist inspectors, but haven't bought newer cars from an independent dealer before.

Given that its underpinnings are basically S-Type, my experience of almost 100k in one of these may be relevant.

The research I did indicated certain replacements would be needed - they were, almost exactly on schedule!

80,000-100,000 miles new MAFs
100,000 miles front and rear suspension refresh
100,000-110,000 miles new EGR valves
130,000+ miles one or more turbos, although I have seen many more with closer to 200,000 miles on the originals...I sold the car at 132,000.

MAFs were cheap - same as Mondeos
Suspension not too bad - ~£180 front for most bushes, £300 rear for new bottom wishbones fitted.
EGR valves more expensive, but not silly money (~£500 fitted for the pair)
Turbos can be mighty expensive - budget for about £1200 for a refurbed one + fitting, so potentially around £4k for a pair fitted.

And don't forget the gearbox oil change at 100,000 or less; about £450 if the Jaguar-branded oil is used, £200 for generic stuff to the same spec.

Quantum tuning also do a fantastic remap for this engine...a PHer in Stoke-on-Trent did mine.

I just had my gearbox oil changed for £300 using the correct lifeguard 6 fluid by a ZF approved gearbox centre. They also fitted an alloy gearbox sump in leu of the plastic one making future changes much cheaper cos the filter is separate on the alloy sump.

Owned my 2011 3.0dS 3.5 years now and its been very reliable. New battery and a new rear shock to cure a clunk has been all that's needed. Servicing is reasonable on Jaguars 3+ year old scheme.

Didn't the XF just win the most reliable 2nd hand car on some motoring magazine or warranty survey???
