a tyre supply and fit company are claiming my warranty is void because the tyres don't have a j on them!

i have repeatedly contacted jaguar to confirm this and all i get is maybe from everyone your risk.

can no one answer a fking question in this country today.

all the figures match even load rating, but it is the manufacture that is not approved and i cant get a straight answer out of jaguar after two weeks

anyone answer this or just a ploy to sell expensive rubber

thx splatspeed

I think that if insurance companies refused to pay out just because tyres didn't have 'J' or 'M' on them there'd be a riot, and rightly so.

Ask your insurance company, because they would be the ones paying out. Get it in writing if it concerns you.

not sure his insurance company will care about his warranty?

Oh sorry, got warranty and insurance mixed up!

Yes, your Jaguar dealer - or whoever the actual warranty company might be underneath - must be able to tell you this. Badger them.

Go have a look around your local Jag dealer's showroom and forecourt.

I'd be surprised if you don't find that some of the new cars don't have "J" marked tyres, "AMS" (Aston) tyres seem to be factory fit in some sizes.

Also look at the second hand cars .... find one without "J" marked tyres (almost guarantee there will be some) and ask if a full set of "J" marked tyres will be fitted prior to sale to ensure no Warranty issues wink

I’d find it hard to believe that they could void a warranty for that reason. I know Porsche used to but only the extended warranty.

My winter tyres are not J marked. My summers may be, they’re the OE and the car’s only 6 months old but I haven’t looked to check.

It’s difficult to know on what basis a warranty could be affected. The difference in performance, in terms of ride, handling, grip etc., between manufacturer marked tyres of different brands can be huge. Probably more than that between the same tyre, manufacturer marked and not.

Anyway, I wouldn’t worry about it, they’ll probably never look!

As someone already asked, are we talking original manufacturer's warranty or the extended/approved-used warranty? My XKR came from a dealer as an official approved-used car with the standard one year (at the time) AUC warranty. It had Pirelli winter tyres fitted which are available as J-marked tyres but these specific ones didn't have that marking on them, they're just the regular ones. I can't say what difference there was or otherwise. Nowhere in the warranty policy documents did it say I had to have J-marked tyres for the warranty to remain valid, I think it may have said that they should be in good and legal condition and correct fitments and ratings for the vehicle in question but that was it.

Maybe I'm just being cynical but I suspect, OP, that your tyre fitter is trying to squeeze a little more cash from you.

I'm convinced (because I haven't done any actual research myself wink ) that the J marking on the Dunlops I fit to my XKR probably only means the tyres' handling characteristics are tweaked slightly to suit my car, rather than having any bearing on whether non-J marked tyres can safely be fitted. Maybe the sidewalls are more/less compliant, or the tread pattern is tuned to avoid resonant frequencies, or whatever. But there's nothing in the handbook telling me not to use other brands/models of tyre.

I'm even more cynical than that, I'm not convinced there's really any difference at all, it's likely just marketing and/or perhaps that the manufacturer has tested the car with a few different makes and model of tyre. It's not like the GT-R or Veyron or half the new Ferarris that are released where they've collaborated with Michelin or Pirelli to develop a tyre specifically for that car. It'll be to give owners (the illusion of) choice in tyres while enabling some extra markup. For a relatively low-volume brand like Jaguar it would make no commercial sense for Pirelli or Dunlop to maintain tooling to manufacture model or brand specific tyres without the cost differential being far greater than it is.

My XFR-S likes to chomp on its rear tyres. I’ve replaced them 4 times in just over a year. The OEM Spec tyres (Pirelli) are rarely available. I put AML spec Pirellis on last year, but they’re as crap as the J rated ones. I now have MPS4S on, which are fab. Just had a chunk of warranty work done at Jag with no mention of the tyres.

Genuinely don't get why Pirelli tyres are as highly thought-of as they are. I've used a few sets on different cars and I've never been impressed. I've used Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas and Vortis the past few times on both of our cars, far cheaper than Pirelli but far more effective.

The j marking on jag tyres star marked on bmw and the other markings on various different tyres are their to denote that they are the manufacture recommended tyres.
As that’s what the car will have had fitted when tested.
As in jag recommend these tyres as they were the best performance in the testing.
It’s should have no bearing on insurance as the only difference is maybe a slightly different rubber compound during manufacturing but not so drastic as if you don’t fit them the car will explode and all the zombies will rise.
You could try ringing a Pirelli fitting center direct and asking the question.
I know they have a fitting center in burton on Trent opposite the Pirelli factory
