Dicky cruise

Dash intermittently displaying "Fail safe engine mode".

Symptoms - cruise control buttons stop working; next thing above message is displayed and the cruise control button on the centre console stops working, as does the "P" inhibitor on the gear shift.
No increase in temperature, oil pressure etc and fault is sporadic.
One would expect it to hold back the horses with this message displayed, but the bugger bursts into life.

Thanks jonscz. Looks like I need to start with the brake light switch. Got funny feeling it might end up being one of the wheel speed sensors.
