Maybe they redesigned it and made it worse hehe

I was dead set on a 5.0 XKR, having second thoughts now I've been reading up.

I’ve been unlucky I guess. Tensioners, then a duff tappet that wore a valve guide ‘S’shaped. New head one side, and the other reconditioned.

The tappet issue is rarer, just make sure you have a decent warranty, though difficult on the XK now due to its age.

Out of interest, what sort of average mpg do you get out of an XKR?
MPG isn’t really high up the list of priorities when driving V8. Think more about smiles per gallon.

I worry more about right-pedal-travel Vs rear-end-grip this time of year hehe
Was interested in comparison to previous V8’s I’ve had (F430 & 458 Italia). The 458 must have been so poor it didn’t have a trip computer reading for mpg hehe

I suppose what touring range do you achieve would be a more pertinent question for Euro trips on Autoroutes etc?

I have a 5.0 XKR and seem to average about 20 MPG in normal driving, creeping up a few MPGs if on a longer run and significantly worse when cold / in town. Probably around 25 MPG at a decent motorway cruise.

I've heard that a 430's fuel consumption is a fair but worse, but I guess it's all relative.

I read a post on one of the XK/XKR owners Facebook groups from a chap who runs a very well-respected Jag specialist garage, he is firmly of the belief that the later design is actually more prone to failure than the earlier one.

I wouldn't let it put you off. There are many thousands of these engines out there in a range of Jaguar and Land/Range Rover models and I don't believe there are nearly as many failures as "the internet" would have us believe. For every one, confirmed failure there are 20 people who have no direct experience of it, claiming it to be the end of the world.

Wondering now if a nice low mileage 4.2 like THIS might be a safer bet? Bearing in mind I keep my cars for a long time (I've had my XJ for almost six years), and it'll only be a weekend car/toy/garage queen. 'Only' 420bhp can't be that bad can it?

About 300 miles out of a tank before I lok to refuel. 150mph on the autobahn will make it drink like a fish! But 70mph will see nearer 400 miles.

That looks lovely. If I was going for a 4.2 then I'd probably aim for a 4.2 XKR-S just because it's more exclusive (only 200 built globally I think) and it has some suspension and steering tweaks for sportier handling, those wheels on that car (known as Vortex) and the nice Alcon 6-pot front/4-pot rear brakes and massive discs. Still "only" 420bhp but that can be easily addressed with a remap and/or a smaller S/C pulley. The R-S also gets pretty much all the options that were available too.

I had a 4.2 XKR prior to the 5.0 I have now. I did my homework and research and concluded that the timing chain issue was sufficiently limited as to not put me off. Touch wood.

Is it possible to ever put 2 under 5year olds in the rear seats of an XKR?

I'm really wanting one, just would be nice on the odd Summers day to go out with the family in it.

Thanks.

This is the one I'm hoping is still available for me to have a look at.

I just found a great car on Auto Trader.

A 10% pulley and bespoke remap will get a 4.2 very close to standard 5.0 power, for about £700.

I would qualify that to say it depends how far you have the front seats back of course, but I'm 6' and have personally witnessed the test-fitting of a 5y/o in the back!

Probably when they get to 7 or 8 it might be trickier so don't hang about... at that stage you can swap to a classic XJS which I can actually get into the back of!

My 8 year old, tall, daughter fits in the back of mine, she prefers it back there, my 6 year old hates it?

Nice one. Thanks. I've put a deposit down and collect the end of the week.

So I'm sure to be out in it soon

When I first looked at getting my XKR my eldest was 15 and probably not far off 6', the younger one was 13. They used to grumble about the space in my X300 preferring LadyB8's Merc. But as soon as I suggested the XKR they were in the back seats in the showroom like a shot "See Dad, we fit no problems". Having said that I don't think I've ever actually had the two of them in the back at the same time since buying the car. If we need to go out as a family the Merc is functional, but I've had kids friends in the back when I wasn't expecting to give people a lift. Not ideal for older teenagers but not impossible for short trips. I've got the convertible, I think the coupe has more room.
