I am looking to buy an XK. I have just taken a 2002 XK8 coupe for a test drive and I am tempted to buy but was surprised by the following: Wind noise (perhaps everything else is so quite, that wind noise becomes apparent?), steering vibration (all speeds), brake vibration (sort of a snatch, not going fast enough for it to be ABS, or could it be?). The N/S rear rim has clearly taken a bash, could this do it?

Are these common faults and ok or a reason to look elsewhere?

XK's do have a steering wheel wobbly, they need v v v accurate balancing. Brembo's suffer from warping if they have been cooked. A car you buy should be perfect, therefore forget it and find another XK. I have a bit of wind noise from the left miorror, but to be honest the car is so qiet inside you are gonna hear something at 100mph

Thanks triple 7. I was pretty impressed by the XK8, so an XKR may require a new pair of brown trousers

Hi,
I am also new to the XKR, justed picked my new toy up on Friday!

I would agree if you are going to splash out then you should go for the XKR.

I have noticed mine also has small stearing vibration between 50-60mph nowmally when slowing from 60 to 50mph but the car is so lovely in every other respect that I am sure I can live with it.

I have been told that the upgraded 20" wheels sometimes causes this as there is of course more mass on the road than most car, but not sure if this is true?

Good luck, and make sure you find a nice one, as theres always another car around the corner.

Regards,
Nick.

Slightly off-topic

My XK has a f**king irritating but intermittent rattle from around the glovebox/passenger airbag area.

It's a newish car and everything else if fine- nothing you've described here.

Any thoughts ?

I had a rattle from the same area in my XJ. It turned out to be a plastic cable connector for the wing mirror (behind the triangular plastic panel in the door) which wasn't clipped onto it's mount properly.

Have you checked that the dash itself is fully screwed in ? If you lift the speaker grills on the dash they hide a large Torx screw that has a tendancy to come undone and causes rattles. Well worth checking, mine was loose and easily tighten with a screw driver !
