Jaguar considered luxury by the public

There is currently an interesting topic in this forum tonight about Mercedes and where they stand in terms of luxury. I'm going to put the same topic here but about Jaguar. What's everyone's opinions on them as a luxury car past and present? I know their not quite Bentley but do they stand out as a status symbol? I'm currently working six days a week to save up for a Jaguar XF.

Premium rather than luxury to me. It is subjective though.

Depends what XF. Up to 2015 they’re a sports saloon or estate. Post 2015 they’re poor quality euro-boxes.

Jaguar XF is the modern Ford Granada.

The XE is the modern Sierra Sapphire.

The XJ and F Type hang on to the last of Jaguar's old place in the world, but most people who in 1990 would have had an XJ-6 would be more likely to buy an Range Rover Sport now.

I find my 2007 Civic Type R quite luxurious to be fair.
2016 XF estate was one of the nicest cars I've ever been in and my friend has an XE which I think looks really classy
(apart from no lights in the boot)

The average person who has no interest in cars would consider them "posh", so I would say yes.

I’ve had an XF and outside of car bore circles it undoubtedly had more prestige than the German brands.

Every time I tell non car people I'm going to buy a Jaguar for my next car they say things like ''you must be earning good money'' or '' god they're expensive''.

They held on to the X350 shape for too long and the X type ruined the brand for me, although it was a lot more than a Mondeo in a party dress, albeit one from Primark, that’s all the public saw it as.

Thankfully they recovered with the F Type but I still don’t see them as luxury.

You are of course correct that I’ve never owned one, or wish to given their current styling. Just been close to the horror stories of the dealers when things go inevitably wrong. Jag aren’t great. Merc no better.

That's because non car people drive a Kia crossover which, ironically, would be more expensive.

Jaguar have been about pace space and grace with value being an important part. Some would argue they made the E Type and haven't been able to build anything that lives up to that hype.

My dad up until recently had a 2014 XF shooting break portfolio 3.0 v6 diesel, it was smooth, comfortable, quiet and handled rather well for a vehicle of its size.

On long drives to visit family in Germany it was the perfect tool could cover the 440miles in under 8 hours without needing to stop for fuel.

Whilst not up there with Bentley/Rolls Royce as luxury it certainly felt luxury sitting inside it.

It always makes me smile how people have different views on car brands. I don't get the prestige branding thing at all, I love Lotus for their racing heritage, handling, steering and relative rarity but I don't consider them prestigious. A few years ago I'd probably have said Jaguar was a prestige brand behind Bentley, Rolls and Aston Martin untill they started making SUVs and smaller saloons(Still, they all do SUV's now don't they)
I've owned two Mercs in recent years, good cars but I don't see Mercs, Audis or BMWs as prestigious , they're just everyday cars to me but each to their own.

There is a reason why millions of taxi drivers and chauffeurs around the world drive Mercedes rather than Jaguar/BMW/Audi or any Japanese/Korean cars, and it is not for their looks.

Actually there are two reasons for the chauffeur trade.

Agree. Jag along with the German marques are pretty mundane cars these days.

That said I’m sure zzxrcv10 will be along at some point to advise better.

Nothing like a comfortable barge though, but I’ve always personally preferred how the German’s drive. XF really was too much like an armchair on wheels for me.

On branding, they’re all pretty much the same these days, outside of the crazy expensive Rolls/Ferrari bracket etc.
