Personally I am not one for these pops and bangs, to me they do seem a tad contrived...
Therein lies the fundamental problem, for me.Pops and bangs are sporty and exciting when you know they occur as an unavoidable outcome from making the engine perform better.
When you know that they're deliberately added by some computer nerd tweaking the code in an ECU, just to fool some idiot into thinking that he's got a bigger willy because of the anti-social noises his car makes... well, that's just a bit sad, frankly.
They're not part of the 'character' of the car. They're as artificial, and as cringeworthy, as making a 4-pot sound like a V8 by playing extra noise over the speakers of the sound system.

But that's PistonHeads all over isn't it? M-badged diesels, painted drum brakes and fake engine noise in your "sports" car.I don't get this PH mentality that to love cars you have to be an obnoxious **** about it. But I guess 20 years ago the same people buying obnoxious loud cars now were driving obnoxious Novas and Fiestas.

Yes, and there are some incredibly selfish individuals on here too.
As a countryside dweller I find my “quiet enjoyment” frequently disturbed by idiots on motorcycles and in ‘fast’ cars who think it their right for their vehicles to make as much noise as they desire.
Doing so with a legitimate purpose in mind (i.e. making maximum power) is understandable although not forgiveable, but doing so because “I’m anti-social and I don’t give a stuff about anyone else” seems simply moronic.
Lucky there is never any heavy machinery in the countryside to spoil your quiet time. As a countryside dweller I find my “quiet enjoyment” frequently disturbed by idiots on motorcycles and in ‘fast’ cars who think it their right for their vehicles to make as much noise as they desire.

+1 from me OP purchased a car because of its characteristics, we all do. They don’t have the right to remove these or do anything that deminishes his enjoyment of his property.
...and what right does the OP have to diminish the enjoyment of other people’s right to quiet enjoyment of their property?Everyone like peace and quiet but it doesn't give you the right to whine like a granny whenever a car goes by.
Either you are incredibly old and grumpy, have severe tinitus or both. Don't inflict your misery on others that are driving by for 20seconds.

Artificially engineered pops and bangs are the automotive equivalent of little boys wedging pieces of cardboard in their bicycle spokes so they can pretend they're riding a powerful motorbike. Nothing wrong with that at primary school age but you'd hope anybody old enough to have a driving license would have left that behind a long time ago.
I guess this reflects the difference between brands and brand expectations. If this was a TVR forum nobody would be complaining about the fact an exhaust was a bit loud. Or does that mean all TVR owners have a mental age of 10 and live on a council estate?
The noise from cars that irritates me most is not the very occasional 'rarp' of a car accelerating, but the noisy diesel sitting outside my window with the engine rattling away needlessly while the driver reads the entire internet on their phone.

No, never would a TVR owner want a quieter exhaust, never. Not ever. The noise from cars that irritates me most is not the very occasional 'rarp' of a car accelerating, but the noisy diesel sitting outside my window with the engine rattling away needlessly while the driver reads the entire internet on their phone.

By the same token by what right do you have to inflict your unnecessary noise on other people enjoying the peace of country life?

Relax gramps, perhaps you’ve forgotten how much fun it was to enjoy cars in your youth, although highly unlikely you’ve ever owned or driven anything of note, but take some comfort that some youths actually like cars. These are the next generation of miserable old bds (you) and the bearers of the automotive torch moving forwards. Yebbut you had to go back 10 years to find it, and you'll find many more posts wanting to take cats and baffles out... Later TVRs with cats and standard factory exhausts weren't nearly as loud as their predecessors.
Anyway, back to the plot - should a Jaguar be loud? 'Grace, pace and space' come to mind. Limo, no. Sports car, why not. Horses for courses as they say. If I have an F-Type I want to hear the exhaust. If I have an XJ I want to hear the ticking of the clock.

Remind me last time TVR delivered a new car...Later TVRs with cats and standard factory exhausts weren't nearly as loud as their predecessors.
