I'm considering one of these, alongside an Audi S8, possibly Merc E63. Wondered if anyone has any experience of these to relate, I'm looking for something a bit different (they seem rare), going back to petrol after a few diesels and like the thought of the low down instant pull from the 5.0 supercharged engine. I've heard mixed tales on reliability, but I'm aware you do tend to hear of the stuff that's goes wrong, not the majority, hopefully that is good ! Any thoughts welcomed and if you've had any other cars I'm considering, any comparisons even better..

The ‘new’ shape XJ dropped the XJR name between 2009 - when it came out - until about 2013-14.

For a while it was called the ‘Supersport’. Essentially the same thing, but with less attention on the angry side, more angled toward luxury.

They had to make do with about 510hp, up until the XJR came back, and it shared the 550hp layout that was in the F type R.

I’d be looking at XJR over supersport, but they’re a LOT more money...

I've had a 2010 XJ Supersport for 4 years as my sensible everyday car. Put about 50k miles on it.

So far it's had a set of tyres, refurbished wheels, brake discs all round, bonnet catch switch, both roof sunblinds runners replaced (what a pain of a job).

Fantastic car. 504bhp is adequate.

This is my 5th XJ (XJ40 Sov, X300 XJR, X308 XJR and X350 Supersport). Not looking forward to replacement time , as it looks like Jag are not going to replace this model.

Building from this:

My XJ, a base spec diesel, was bought 3.5 years and 65,000 miles ago.

My front sunroof blind has failed runners. No warranty and I was quoted £1100 for the repair. I didn’t get them fixed...

It needed ‘banana arm’ lower ball joints at about 55k - and an indicator stalk (causing a contact issue which led the headlights to flick off/on at random).

Other than that, it’s had a battery, tyres, and brakes - so other than consumables it’s been OK

thanks for replies, I'm keeping my eye on the market for a decent one to look at, also considering Audi S8. It seems like the sunroof is a pain, but most I look at have the pan roof, hence something to consider !

The sun roof is fitted to all X351 XJs, and the fix for the runners didn’t come until after the age you’re looking at - a lot have had the warranty work done though. Another sun roof issue on the early cars is a ‘cracking’ or ‘popping’ noise from the frame, I think it’s because of the steel casting against the aluminium shell. Mine does it in the cold weather

I saw an S8 on the road yesterday - possibly newer than the age you’d be considering, this was a 2015/16 at a guess. Looked fantastic, if not a bit boring spec, black-on-black - some people suggest they’re too anonymous in the Audi design, but they definitely have size and presence on the road
