I wouldn’t let that put me off personally and for a number of reasons . As Pursyluv says above it’s not a big deal to rectify should you choose to . Its also more of a maintenance issue than anything else , any idea that the arse is liable to fall out of your FType is complete nonsense . It’s also completely hidden so in no way detracts from the aesthetics of the car .
This. That looks like very minor surface rust to me. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have it rubbed down and undersealed for peace of mind. Both of my XKRs have had a lot more surface rust than that on the subframes and never seen it mentioned on an MOT.
All corrosion starts with surface corrosion, but in my opinion that's gone slightly beyond that stage The visible corrosion could be dealt with, as long as it's all removed properly before treating it (not always easy or accessible). However, there's a good chance those are also corroding from the inside out and you can't treat what you can't see. That's a shocking lack of protection from the factory. Premium car, my arse, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole

Premium Products , I think we can argue all day over what that constitutes . Jaguar in my opinion have rarely been a Premium Product certainly not since the fifties and possibly early sixties , it’s largely been image over substance . Occasionally there has been the proverbial false dawn with Models such as the X150 but they were never built upon and nowadays we find ourselves little more than an SUV manufacturer . Getting back to the F Type I think to damn the Model over the occasional rusty subframe is a gross over reaction . In most respects it’s a fine car if a flawed one .

The local jag specialist used to strip and treat the subframes, a very time consuming job they said. However they stopped doing it because on some cars it was re-appearing after a year. It wasn't a case of the job not done properly but the metal rotting from the inside out. They said the 13 and 14 plate cars were worse in their experience.

I rest my case.

I disagree. Mechanical issues are a doddle to fix compared to corrosion.

Im not too sure what you are disagreeing with ? What I am saying is that not every owner with an F type has a rusty subframe . A previous Poster cites 2013/2014 Models as being the worst affected which indicates to me teething problems early in the Models life . I agree that to the Buyers of these early Models thats a completely unacceptable situation especially if the problem has been left unresolved by previous Owners and the corrosion has become terminal . Mechanical issues are often less costly and time consuming to sort than corrosion though not always . A good example is perhaps Porsche and their iconic 911 . I have a Dealer friend who simply wont buy certain engined Models because of their unreliability .

TBH I misread your post, I thought you meant that to dismiss that car was a gross over reaction. My bad

I can't help you there I'm afraid, but obviously enough to stop doing the process once they realised it wasn't surface rust from the outside going in but from the inside breaking through to the outside.

Agreed not all cars have this problem but it's not something you'd expect in this day and age.

I suspect its a case of subframe singular rather than subframes plural when it comes to how many F Types your local Garage has encountered . Dont get me wrong , I don"t doubt the sincerity in which you make your Post I just dispute its a major F type problem and that your Garage has any experiences to suggest otherwise . Its certainly a " fly in the ointment " if you purchase one of these early F Types and find its immediately on your " to do list " though hopefully an MOT would have uncovered any subframe issues much earlier .

This.

That's the sort of corrosion I would have expected to see underneath a well used '70s Renault or Leyland when I was a spanner monkey rather than a '20s premium car.

Given it's a widespread issue there's clearly way too many pennies and grammes being shaved off.
I dont know where you have been hiding Steve because this sort of thing is nothing new where Jaguars are concerned . A beautiful aluminium superstructure above underpinned by some shoddy " Brummy " metal underneath . That said I have never suffered an MOT failure on account
of it .

I've not been hiding anywhere and am well aware of Jaguar's shonky reputation with regard to quality.

That's why I'm not contemplating buying another one anytime soon. smile

I have owned a 2015 v6s coupe for 2.5 years. Underneath has some minor sub frame surface rust that I will sort this year.

In an ideal world, this would not need to be sorted, not pleased, but I will get over it.

Previous car was an excellent 2005 BMW 650. BMW was great, but had some issues. Valve oil stem seals at £1500, corrosion on the bottom of both drivers doors, corrosion on door mirror mounts. The rear differential was a sight to see on a cutting edge car, a pig iron diff, that left chunks of rust on the drive.....

Sadly, most modern cars have issues, strerchy cam chains, high pressure fuel rails, oil stem seals, etc, etc.

I loved the BMW, and I think my Jag is a match for the BMW quality, but drives better and feels a lot more special.

Sadly nothing is perfect, but some cars just feel special and worth the effort. The F-Type is definately worth the effort.
