Afternoon All!

Just got my renewal notice for my '98 XJR, nearly £700 garaged etc and with business use, seems a bit steep for a man of 33, what do you lot reckon, is it normal? Any recommendations for firms you use?

I've just renewed my insurance with Norwich Union through Jag Privilege paid £650 on a 2.5 x type sport full comp 5 years no claims protected bonus and I'm 44 live in rural east yorkshire for private use garaged, so from where I'm sitting with an XJR for £700 you've got off lightly!

I must have been ripped then transferred from my Maserati with 6 months to go and only got £50 back on a premium of £900 therefore it would have worked out at £800 for the year. I'm 36 with full bonus and live in the lowest car crime area in the uk. Also has a 7K milage limit.

As I'm thinking of an XJR reading this thread had suddenly made me realise that you're all younger than me , so maybe I'm not too young to own one after all! Not old enough to have "classic wood" yet though!

No - It's the modern ones that have the wood
My classic Jag doesn't

Be aware that whichever insurance company you call will ask you about annual mileage but then will never ask you what the
clock says now - and will never ever ask you what the clock says if anything happens.
Always tell them it's garaged (they will never check) and never say that you use it for business.
It's their risk - so let them take it.
You can shave a beard and moustache off your insurance this way.
Perfectly legal. Perfectly sensible.

Also...
Whoever you bank with has a deal with an insurance company and if you ask your bank manager
to get you a better deal than anything you have been quoted so far he almost certainly can and will.

Sounds expensive to me. I'm thinking about swapping my leon cupra for an xjr so asked my insurer (Elelphant) how much it would be and they said £900. However I'm 23 with three years no claims so you should get it much cheaper than that.

Not very sensible and totally illegal. Anything you say that isn't true instantly invalidates your insurance if they ever find out. If you don't have a garage and you say you do its fairly easy to establish if your car is stolen.

It always seems a good idea until you actually need to make a claim. By then its too late. This applies to undeclared modifications, the whole shooting match. For the sake of saving £50 a year its REALLY not worth it. I work in insurance by the way.

My XJ always lived in the Garage, till the XK came along as well. When I called the insurance company and told them that the car would no longer be garaged they noted it, sent out new paper work, but didn't put up my premium.

Whilst I agree that they do not ask your mileage, it would be easy for the insurers to prove (via MoT certs for example) if you had done many more miles than suggested. They would only check whether you had a garage or not if you needed to claim, and lieing about Business use would only come up if you claimed whilst using the car for business. In essence, thanks for your thoughts but I'd rather make sure that I and my car are properly insured.

Just a note to say that after getting a couple of quotes from elsewhere (Adrian Flux price the best, Groomi. Not quite as cheap as yours, probably due to Racing Green Sports exhaust?). I rang my current insurers (Liverpool & Victoria) and they gave me a 10% discount, worth noting I'd say! I was pleased as their level of cover is very good. Thanks to all for your advice on this!

Hi all. Just acquired a 2000 model year XJR V8, low miles, FDSH. Beautiful. I previously owned an XJR6 but sold it a few years back due to babies. Here I am again!

Anyway, insurance these days, what is the going rate?

On Friday got quotes ranging from £980 to £2160 fully comp!

Having read this old thread this morning, today I went to Privilege (£819), then Adrian Flux (£775) and finally, AON who agreed to transfer my wife's full NCD to me for the purposes of this insurance and quoted me £694 fully comp.

As a benchmark, I am 35, live in Bucks, car is garaged and immobilised, includes commuting and insured value is £10,500.

I think the insurance on my XJR6 was around £880 (on street parking in SW London) a few years back so to me this sounds a good deal.

Anyone think of an insurer who might beat this?

I maintain a list of insurers that have been mentioned as decent here (usual disclaimers apply). If you hear of any others let me know.

As I say, Adrian Flux were good - they asked for the Privilege quote and then knocked £45 off that - They may have done a bit more but I didn't push harder at that stage.

I used Adrian Flux on my Maser a while back too and they were good. I'd add them to your list for Jag owners unless anyone has any bad stories about them (I have heard good stuff).

I will check one or two from your list but will probably go with AON as that price is only £50 more than the wife's policy on her Mercedes ML ! (and they want my house insurance too) Must switch both those to AON too next renewal!

I should add that as I have been insured on my wife's policies (incl last XJR) I have no NCD of my own as such. Hence AON's deal to transfer my wife's to me beats Adrain Flux (who wouldn't).

Try the Post Office.

They were incredibly keen with my X-type. And I got £50 postal order off the headline renewal fee.
They beat all, including Jag Priviledge, and Norwich Union - who went from being the keenest to one of the most expensive, overnight. And my circumstances hadn't changed, save I'd become a year older.....
