Brake pedal switch?

Anyone know if the brake lights and gearbox lock are activiated by a brake pedal switch?
My brake lights don't always work and at the same time I can't get the gearbox out of park. So I am assuming there is a switch out of line on the brake pedal. Please don't tell me its electronic!
Oh, sorry, it's a 1997 XJR V8.
