XJ8 1998 auto gearbox problems
Discussion
My XJ8 gearbox makes a grating? noise when accelerating in low gears when cold - as the the car warms up the noise gradually goes away - despite this noise which I assume is coming from the gearbox, the car drives well and gear changes are smooth and seem to occour at the right times. The cat has covered just under 80,000m. I have been told it could be a brake band slipping but I know nothing about auto boxes other than any faults are likely to be expensive!!
Should I just drive the car until something fails are would the recommendation be to get it fixed without delay?

Without driving the car it could be 100 different things... however what I would say is that I think you should change the oil in the gearbox.
Yes, it is fill for life but an oil change will certainly extend the life of the transmission. Very good insurance compared to the cost of a rebuild.
The oil is Esso LT 71141.
