Just to add...

Was at Elite yesterday and John showed me their own XK which they had just bought ready for the manual conversion demo.

It will be a full manual i.e. not paddle shift or electronic buttons.

Watch this space...

Hi Robo

This is what was discused earlyer, the problem every one is finding is that the gearbox and engine have to talk to each other via the ECUs even if it is a manual there is a lot of comunication going on for the engine to work properly.

Hope to see you again soon.

Since writing the above I have now driven the car, and the six speed ZF auto box in sequential mode is nothing short of fantastic. This confirms my view that to pull this out is a bit vandalistic and deprives you of all the combined facilities this and the related car systems offer. You are defacing a work of art!

I agree with the sequential convertion the gearbox is fantastic,
but with a manual convertion you will be freeing up quite a %age of BHP

No I've driven the new XKR with the standard ZF Auto box which has the sport/Paddle mode. Its just so good that I cant visualise someone wanting to take it out. I was a die hard manual man, but its not the same now. The world is changing. The sophistication and interconnectivity of the various systems in the car and what they will do for you is too complex to compete with a manual box. Unless you are JM Fangio trying 100%, all the time.

And though I take the point about more bhp which is obviously good, I think there are other issues like how the gearbox and the engine management system relate to the traction control. If you get out of line it just sorts it out for you and frankly I'd rather be a live wuss than a dead hero. I trolled along doing perfectly matched instantaneous and excellent sounding up and down changes and I'd be lucky to get it spot on 25% of the time if it was all manual.

I also think that the modern way to get more horsepower is probably going to be more and more powerful engines. How long till we get an XKR-R or whatever they decide to call it, with 500 bhp plus? Its like computers - the power output just keeps rising to deal with the system demands.

so your saying you enjoyed driving the new XK with the sequential box? that's what iv been talking about doing.. the old xk is a plain auto, no paddle option.
The point you make about being able to get 100% perfect gearchanges everytime is a valid one, but that's why I like a manual, I think to much technology can get in the way, I dread the day they bring in auto steering etc, yes ill be able to make 100% perfect corners every time, but it won't be just me, it will be me and a whole bunch of electronic gubbins.
It takes away the fun IMO.

The problem with this is that you need to make a module to emulate the TCM and specifically provide a neutral signal and in-gear signal with the correct speed sensors. It also needs to provide the correct CAN token.

That is the only way you can get the engine, traction control and cluster to work properly.

The hardware is easy, as the first AJ26s ran with Getrag 265s or 290s behind them.

The paddle shift gearbox is just fantastic fun and still very much under your control, the gearchanges just seem to match the image of the car. Its different from manual, of course.

I converted an XKR engine to manual 5 yrs ago using a T56 and my own twin plate clutch set up and dropped the lot into an XJS if u wanna see a pic look at www.paragondesignuk.com/news.htm or even www.geocities.com/jagzmanv8/Engine.html all done in good fun originally and like previously said bloody hard work as far as the ECU's go but I did it and I will do it again in my next demonstrator. But alas definately not cheap and while u are at it definately needs an LSD!

No worries I do have new side sill covers, rear bumper as well as the new XKR 07 front in the pipeline. I am just waiting for our present demonstrator to sell so I can buy another XK to do all the mods to including the manual conversion. But if you want to use the Arden bits no probs I can get them and fit whatever you like. ECU chipping and pulley mods are no probs we also do induction upgrades. If you like we can discuss anywork you wish 'off forum' via email so we don't upset the moderators!
