Jaguar Kougar Owner?
Discussion
My father is a Kougar owner and has had it for 12 years now. Probably one of the most used too with nearly 50,000 miles (35,000 added by us lot). Nurburgring, rolling roads, hillclimbs its been used as God intended! Bloody marvelous piece of kit. What do you want to know?

In basic terms Kougars were built from a range of either S-types/420s/XJ6s. Most of the later ones were based on the xJ6 as the others began to appreciate. Yours (like the old man's) may well have been based on an S-type given the age of the English registration (probably a 1967 plate) and the fact that you cite it as a 3.8. In actuality there is little difference between the component parts shipped across (drivetrain- suspension, gearbox, diff etc). These parts remained fairly constant (as far as I am aware) from model to model. Frankly things do get chopped and changed. For instance my father's has an E-type head (triple SUs etc) for added poke. The chassis (and obviously the body) are bespoke.
There is little difference between Mark One and Mark Two from memory just detail refinements and the removal of the aforementioned radius arms. On reviewing the pictures on your website I would suggest that yours is a Mark 2 as it lacks these. They were found to be unnecessary (with the lighter body axle location was not an issue). While they can be removed most owners of Mark Ones leave them there. I am pretty certain there was only one Mark three and that is distinguishable by its boot lid. Overall something around 100 have been built in total.
All cars are different (that is one of the joys of them). For instance my fathers has wire wheels and has the full (think Caterham Seven) windscreen. Yours looks really cool with that screen but on the flipside you are unable to attach either sidescreens or a hood (although our hood has only been up twice the sidescreens are heavily used as they cut the spray kicked up by the back wheels in the wet).
The most important thing for you to do though is get in touch with the club who produce a sporadic newsletter with event details and technical tips. They are a fun bunch and very knowledgeable. Please don't imagine it as some hugely professional outfit however, more a bunch of friends who enjoy their cars! There is also an annual trip to the Nurburgring Classic, which could be a way for you to meet people.
Please do contact Barry Surtees (General Secretary), 44 Withdean Road, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 5BL, England or on (+44)1273 553774.
Hope this helps!!
