Anyone know much about XJ12 (XJ40 shape) ?

The local dodgy car lot has what I thought was a clean silver XJ6 for sale for £1695. On closer inspection it turns out to be an XJ12! Does anyone know how many of these were produced and what they are like to drive. At the price and condition I am tempted just for the sake of being safe in the knowlege that I have owned a v12 before they become extinct.
I know nothing about them, but your reasoning of wanting to have a V12 before you pop your clogs is more than good enough to justify spending £1700!
Have a search in this forum, I recall some positive comments about them, especially the ride quality of the XJ40 in general and the smoothness & torque of the v12 in particular - and the v12s are supposed to be fine if they're looked after I believe.
Also, what else can you do with £1700 these days?

The V12 is a very nice engine, plenty of power and loads of torque - you cannot fail to be impressed when driving.
The XJ40s are of varying quality, though a V12 will be a late model, so you might be on to a bit of a bargain.
Would be a definite advantage if you owned a petrol station - they like a drink.

I'll go and have a closer look at it this weekend- had a quick peer and it appears very tidy with no major rust. It has an irish plate but a bit of research suggests that it must be a 1994 as it has the lattice wheels. Its silver with dark grey leather (in good condition). The thing that I noticed is that it has square exhaust outlets.
I would buy it.
If you don't like it or its a bit ropey, just shove it on Ebay and get rid.
I went out with a girl who's dad had a 6.0 litre V12 XJS, it was one of the late ones. What a motor! When he put his foot down the bonnet would rise up and the noise was great!

I had one of these a couple of years ago, and it was a lovely car. I bought it out of nostalgia, really, since I ran Jags in the late 80s and early 90s. In the intervening years I had forgotten how much 'character' the old jag possess.
The first time I took it for a wash (three guys with various pressure washers, buckets and sponges) it turned out to be monsoon season INSIDE the car. The British Leyland dna was alive and well.
But it was a brilliant old car, and I'm quite sorry to have moved it on.

Unfortunatly (for us owners anyway!) the XJ40 range is generally not valuable and I would suspect that the fuel & insurance costs of a V12 coupled with the added complexity puts most people off, probably resulting in a lower price. The engines in these are 6.0l and only became available from 1993 in think, with at least a drivers airbag, possible a passenger one as well for 1994 models. These late models are generally built very well, having had numerous improvements built in to sort out earlier problems. Mine for instance mechanically is very near X300 spec! In fact, they were built on a new production line installed to prodeuce the X300 and they are one hell of a car! The extra torgue of a V12 however, does put extra strain on the drivetrain and the bushes/joints etc. A good maintenance history is essential. There serious bit over, if it has all the ticks in the right boxes and you are prepared to spend on it, then go for it and enjoy it!!!

Surely the good lady understands that you need both.
I've taken to the tactic of every time the good lady suggests that the XK should be replaced by something more practical for the kids to fit in the back, I suggest that we add a Mk2 or S-Type (60 version) as well I've even conceded that I might be prepared to look at one with power steering so it would be easier for her to drive (with the kids in the back) whilst I drive the 150

Unfortunately there is a Daimler 250 V8 (being restored as we speak) and a Porsche Boxster as well as an everyday Passat in my fleet-so I can sort of understand why she's not keen on another! Saying she loves XK150s and would let me have one of those at the drop of a hat

Buy a 150, and the XJ and tell her it's spare cars for the XK
